A bill, in 1836, for closing the mails to abolitionist literature, another defiance of the Constitution, Amendment I., secured engrossment in the Senate by the casting vote of Vice-President Van Buren; Wright, Tallmadge, and Buchanan also favoring; but failed to pass, nineteen to twenty-five, because Benton, Clay, and Crittenden had the patriotism to vote nay.
"What damned nonsense!" exclaimed Sheldon, in a pet; and, rising, strode heavily to the door, but met there his Major, one Benjamin Tallmadge, coming in, all over mud. This fiery young dragoon's plume, helmet, and cloak were dripping, and he impatiently dashed the water from feathers and folds. "Sir!" began Colonel Sheldon loudly, "I have as yet given no order to saddle!"
The vote upon the Resolution stood as follows: Yeas. Messrs. Allen, Bayard, Benton, Black, Buchanan, Brown, Calhoun, Clay, of Alabama, Clay, of Kentucky, Clayton, Crittenden, Cuthbert, Fulton, Grundy, Hubbard, King, Lumpkin, Lyon, Nicholas, Niles, Norvell, Pierce, Preston, Rives, Roane, Robinson, Sevier, Smith, of Connecticut, Strange, Tallmadge, Tipton, Walker, White, Williams, Wright, Young.
And, "By God, sir," says Tallmadge, "the orders must have come from somebody, for they're doing it!" "Sir sir!" stammered Sheldon, "What d'ye mean by that?" "Ah!" says Tallmadge coolly, "I mean what I say. Orders must have been given by somebody." No doubt; for the orders came from himself, the clever trooper that he was and so he left Sheldon a-fuming and Major Lockwood and Mr.
Douglas," said the President rising to his feet excitedly, "I desire you to remember that no Democrat ever yet differed from an administration of his own choice without being crushed. Beware of the fate of Tallmadge and Rives." "Mr. President" rejoined Douglas also rising, "I wish you to remember that General Jackson is dead."
Cadwallader Golden, of counsel for the defendants, made a motion before Judge Tallmadge for an order to prevent the District Attorney from using the preliminary evidence taken at the private examinations. "It was a proceeding," he said, "arbitrary and subversive of the first principles of law and liberty," "which would have disgraced the reign of Charles and stained the character of Jeffries."
Major Tallmadge and a cornet passed through the hall with their regimental standard, but Sheldon pettishly bade them to place it in the parlour and await further orders for no reason whatever, apparently, save to exhibit a petty tyranny.
Ogden, and of Colonel William Smith, son-in-law of John Adams and Surveyor of the Port of New York, under the Act of 1794. The prisoners were taken before Judge Tallmadge of the United States District Court. They were refused counsel, and were forced by threats of imprisonment to submit to a searching examination.
She was born in Portage County at Tallmadge, where her father was settled as minister. A sculptor who, if not the greatest American sculptor, has yet achieved in his art the most American things ever done in it, is J. Q. A. Ward, the author of the "Indian Hunter," and many other noble if less native works.
His Excellency had granted the request in the face of objections from two general officers, whom the marquis did not name. As I thanked him he gave me this order: "To Major Tallmadge: "The bearer, Hugh Wynne, Esq., Captain, Second Company, Third Regiment of Pennsylvania foot, has herewith permission to visit Major Andre. "October 1, 1780."
