Lucia felt herself happily released from her cares. Poet and translator, s. of George R., who held various Government offices, including that of Treasurer of the Navy.
'Strafford' was performed at Covent Garden Theatre on May 1. Mr. Browning wrote to Mr. Fox after one of the last rehearsals: May Day, Lincoln's Inn Fields. Dear Sir, All my endeavours to procure a copy before this morning have been fruitless. I send the first book of the first bundle. Pray look over it the alterations to-night will be considerable.
They, therefore, directed their ministers at Utrecht to signify to the lord privy seal and the Earl of Strafford, "That the States were disposed to comply with Her Majesty, and to desire her good offices with France; particularly, that Tournay and Condé might be left to them as part of their barrier, without which they could not be safe: That the Elector of Bavaria might not be suffered to retain any town in the Netherlands, which would be as bad for Holland as if those places were in the hands of France: Therefore the States proposed, that Luxembourg, Namur, Charleroy, and Nieuport, might be delivered to the Emperor.
With the greatest fault and the only crime that Charles in his whole life committed Mr. Macaulay does not reproach him the consent to the execution of Lord Strafford that indeed, as he himself penitentially confessed, was a deadly weight on his conscience, and is an indelible stain on his character; but even that guilt and shame belongs in a still greater degree to Mr. Macaulay's patriot heroes.
