Windows and doors were gone from the grand old edifice; inside, the fire was shining; devouring at its dreadful ease, the sacred architecture and furnishings that it had swept down to the ground. "See! There he is!" whispered Miss Smalley to Mr. Sparrow, as she gazed with unconscious tears falling fast down her pale old cheeks.

Lady Verinder's Will has been asked for, and examined, already!" This was news indeed! There was absolutely nothing which could be contested in the Will; and there was nobody I could think of who had the slightest interest in examining it. "Did you hear who asked for the Will?" I asked. "Yes; the clerk had no hesitation in telling ME. Mr. Smalley, of the firm of Skipp and Smalley, asked for it.

Tripp had stopped in at various dwellings along the main road, to compare notes on the captain's appearance and the Atkins address. Asaph and Bailey and Alpheus Smalley were at Simmons's. Captain Cy knew better than to attempt his hurried trip by way of the road. He had no desire to be held up and congratulated.

At various times during my college course I visited Boston, and was taken by my classmate and old friend George Washburn Smalley to hear Parker. He drew immense crowds of thoughtful people. The music-hall, where he spoke, contained about four thousand seats, and at each visit of mine every seat, so far as I could see, was filled. Both Parker's prayers and sermons were inspiring.

Smalley, who kept open a breathing-space round us, my companion and myself thought we should have been asphyxiated. The company was interested, as some of my readers maybe, to know what were the attractions offered to the visitors besides that of meeting the courteous entertainers and their distinguished guests.

Swinton, Smalley, Whitelaw Reed, and the other notable war correspondents of the American Civil War, in that they had not the difficulties of outlandish tongues to contend with. I own myself to be a poor linguist, and have many and many a time suffered for my dullness of what the Scotch call "up-take."

"What was it you wanted to talk about, Sol?" asked Simeon, sitting down beside his friend on the truck. The Captain smoked in silence for a moment. Then he asked a question in return. "Sim," he said, "have you heard anything about Williams buying the Smalley house? Is it true?" Phinney nodded. "Yup," he answered, "it's true.

He doubted it. The interne didn't look the type probably he was dated for some obscure job, like a general practitioner. He shrugged. It took all kinds to make a profession. Even the Smalleys had their place. "That girl you brought in," Smalley said as they entered a white car emblazoned with the three crosses, red, blue, and green, that represented the three fields of medicine.

Still worse was it with some of the tutors, who took us through various classical works, but never with a particle of appreciation for them as literature or philosophy. I have told elsewhere how my classmate Smalley fought it out with one of these.

Amidst the handkerchief-waving, applauding people he saw Keturah Bangs and Alpheus Smalley and Angeline Phinney and Captain Salters even Alonzo Snow, his recent opponent in town meeting. Josiah Dimick was there, too, apparently having a fit. On the doorstep stood Georgianna and and yes, it was true beside her, grandly extending a welcoming hand, the majestic form of the Honorable Heman Atkins.
