And since night was the time when Dickie Deer Mouse was awake, and up and doing, it would have been a wonder if the two had never met. One thing is certain: Dickie Deer Mouse was not eager to make Simon Screecher's acquaintance. Whenever he heard Simon's call he stopped and listened.
At last accounts the treasures had not been reached, and this incident is mentioned only to show how this belief in buried treasures continues even to the present day. There is a legend which differs somewhat from the ordinary run of these stories, and it is told about a little island on the coast of Cape Cod, which is called Hannah Screecher's Island, and this is the way its name came to it.
"Don't you suppose" Chirpy asked him hopefully "don't you suppose I could jump out of Simon Screecher's reach if he tried to catch me?" "You could find out by trying," said Mr. Meadow Mouse. So Chirpy Cricket began to feel more cheerful. He even fiddled a bit, thinking that he had no special reason to worry. And then all at once he stopped making music. Mr.
Simon Screecher inquired in a testy tone. "Yes!" Solomon admitted. "But I haven't had my dessert yet.... What are you looking at so closely, Cousin Simon, down there on the ground?" An angry light came into Simon Screecher's eyes. "Can't I look where I please?" he snapped. And he changed his seat again, so that he might get a better view of Dickie and Solomon at the same time.
And every time he heard Simon Screecher's unearthly wail he shivered so hard that his fiddling actually seemed to shiver too. Mr. Meadow Mouse inquired regularly whether Chirpy had hit upon any plan. And at last Mr. Meadow Mouse announced that he would have to think of one himself. So he sat down and looked very wise, while Chirpy Cricket fiddled for him, because Mr.
Solomon exclaimed. "Then you can have no objection to sharing a specially nice tidbit with your own cousin." Dickie Deer Mouse shivered. But he did not dare move, with one of Simon Screecher's great, glassy eyes staring straight at him. And there was something else that did not help to put him at his ease: Solomon Owl seemed to be watching him likewise! "Haven't you dined to-night?"
Meadow Mouse "some other way of being safe from Simon Screecher." Mr. Meadow Mouse acted as if he thought he had been a great help when he said that Chirpy Cricket would have to think of another way to avoid Simon Screecher's cruel talons. But the more Chirpy turned the matter over in his mind the further he seemed to be from any plan. For several days and nights he puzzled over his problem.
He never ate a whole meal in just one spot, but preferred to move about wherever his fancy took him. Simon himself said that he could eat off and on all night long, if he kept moving. Somehow Mr. Meadow Mouse had heard of this saying of Simon Screecher's.
What with Solomon Owl's hooting, his cousin Simon Screecher's quavering call, and the musical Frog's family's concerts in Cedar Swamp, it was a wonder that Johnnie Green ever managed to fall asleep. The Katydids alone were almost enough to drive anybody frantic if he let himself listen to them with their everlasting cry of Katy did, Katy did; she did, she did.
Whenever he heard Solomon Owl's rolling call, or his cousin Simon Screecher's quavering whistle, Dickie Deer Mouse always pulled his head inside his house in a hurry. For they were usually on the lookout for him. And he knew it.
