It was not until after the appearance of the second edition of his chief work that Schopenhauer experienced in increasing measure the satisfaction which his impatient ambition had expected much earlier of seeing his philosophy seriously considered. As we have mentioned above, Schopenhauer's doctrines have exercised an attractive force in artistic circles also.

In a word, Schubert improvised with the pen, and he seems to have been an exception to Schopenhauer's rule, that the greatest writers are those whose thoughts come to them before writing, and not while writing.

Pessimism is commonly and erroneously supposed to be the distinguishing feature of Schopenhauer's system. It is right to remember that the same fundamental view of the world is presented by Christianity, to say nothing of Oriental religions. That Schopenhauer conceives life as an evil is a deduction, and possibly a mistaken deduction, from his metaphysical theory.

I seemed to understand the reason of their failure to satisfy me from the writings of Feuerbach, which I studied at the same time. What fascinated me so enormously about Schopenhauer's work was not only its extraordinary fate, but the clearness and manly precision with which the most difficult metaphysical problems were treated from the very beginning.

True to his ruling passion, philosophy had claimed him to the last, a set of Schopenhauer's works receiving his attention when able to study; but this was varied with readings in the 'Mermaid Series' of old plays, in which he took much pleasure.

Existence, when summed up, has an enormous surplus of pain over pleasure. You complain that this philosophy is comfortless! But Schopenhauer sees life through Schopenhauer's eyes, and tells the truth about it as he sees it. He does not care for your likes and dislikes.

Many of Schopenhauer's originalities evaporate when we come to translate them into a more close and precise terminology. Later. One has merely to turn over the "Lichtstrahlem" of Herder to feel the difference between him and Schopenhauer. The latter is full of marked features and of observations which stand out from the page and leave a clear and vivid impression.

Brain and thought are the same; the former is nothing other than the will to know, as the stomach is will to digest. Those only talk of an immaterial soul who import into philosophy where such ideas do not belong concepts taught them when they were confirmed. Schopenhauer's philosophy is as rich in inconsistencies as his personality was self-willed and unharmonious.

To this it may be added that in combating the method of Fichte and Hegel, who spun a system out of abstract ideas, and in discarding it for one based on observation and experience, Schopenhauer can be said to have brought down philosophy from heaven to earth. In Schopenhauer's view the various forms of Religion are no less a product of human ingenuity than Art or Science.
