The Te Deum, which is celebrated every year, on November 15th, in honour of King Albert's Saint's day, is forbidden. From the month of March, 1915, it is practically a forbidden thing to sing the Brabançonne, even in the schools. In some of the orders issued there is still a weak attempt at "respecting," in a German way, "the people's patriotic feelings."

"Why, look ye, you nincompoop," was the reply, "can't there be more'n one Jack Jones on the purser's books, and wherefore shouldn't there be more than one San Francisco in the chart of the world? Doesn't it stand to reason, seeing it's a saint's name, and they're all Catholics along that coast, that they should have a Saint Francisco in Peru?"

No saint's face, a very woman's, its pale, reserved beauty unstrung with pain, her bosom full of earthly love, but in her eyes that look which Mary must have given, when, after she thought her Lord was dead, He called her, "Mary!" and she, looking up, said, "Master!" She had reached the highway at last.

A considerable olive grove, whose grey-green leaves shone like silver in the light breeze, offered shade and shelter to a large colony of doves. There was a thriving village, with a saint's tomb for chief attraction, and solid walls to suggest that the place does not enjoy perennial tranquillity.

They are like the show pictures that some nobleman hangs in his public gallery; but our Iseo is the treasure that he hides in his inner chamber. You tell me you saw it in summer, when it looks up like a saint's eye, reflecting the whole of heaven. It was then too that I first saw it.

But on one side there was a little whitewashed apartment, which bore the traditionary title of the Saint's Chamber, because holy men in their youth had slept, and studied, and prayed there.

Of the Saint's Prophecy concerning Six Priests, and of a Skin which he bestowed to them.

"My lord, you're a gentleman." Nelson came to him with outstretched hand and a wonderful smile. "Forgive me," he said. The darkness drifted from the saint's face, leaving behind it evening calm, the stars beginning to shine. Folding his arms, he bowed deliberately. Nelson's hand dropped. He stopped short, and his smile died.

The church got at it and added to it a saint's name; but for all its little world it remained Bébée Bébée when it trotted no higher than the red carnation heads; Bébée when its yellow curls touched as high as the lavender-bush; Bébée on this proud day when the thrush's song and the cock's crow found her sixteen years old.

On a previous occasion the tomb had been violated by Jean, Duc de Berry, who wished to remove both the saint's head and her two rings. Whilst he was making the attempt, however, the skeleton is said to have withdrawn its hand so that he might not possess himself of the rings.
