They tried to tell Jonas the whole story, and about Rollo's giving the fish to Henry, and its being a bailment. But they could not make Jonas understand it very well. He said he did not know any thing about bailment, except bailing out boats he had never heard of bailing fishes. Jonas accepted the office of cabinet keeper.
Every time I'd try to go into the kitchen the cook would drive me out with a stick for fear I would eat the other things in the cellar and oh, dear, I had a miserable time of it. "The worst of it came two or three days later," continued the Poker. "It was Rollo's bath day, and as I was Rollo of course I had to take Rollo's bath, and my, wasn't it awful!
I am afraid that she will not like it, though I think that it will be real good fun." "Very likely it will be fun for you," said Mr. George. "I would a great deal rather go across in a mail steamer at low tide than in any other way," said Rollo. Rollo's explanation in respect to the mail steamer was correct.
All this Rollo's fellow-traveller attempted to explain to him; but as he spoke in German, Rollo did not understand him. When Mr. George and Rollo reached their hotel, and had got fairly established in their room, Mr. George took his cane and prepared to "go exploring," as he called it. "Well, Rollo," said he, "what shall we go to see first?" "I want to go and see the cathedral," replied Rollo.
"Yes," said Rollo's father; "but we have nothing to do with the boy now, we are only considering the liabilities of the watchmaker." "And if it had been the lever that was broken," asked Rollo, "what then?"
Gerald, however, had the presence of mind to reach out his own oar at once, and draw the lost one back towards the boat, so that the Swiss boy seized it, and, to Rollo's great joy, took it in again. The boat at one time came very near drifting against one of the great water wheels which were revolving in the stream.
The little lake at his feet still and dark, with the side of the woody glen doubled in its mirror, and the sunlight in the tops of the trees reflected in golden glitter from the middle of the pool, was a picture to tempt the eye: but Rollo's eye, if it glanced, came back again. He was picking the feathers from a bird he had shot, and doing it deftly.
Rollo's first move was to take the girl's hand, and the second to inquire in a low voice how she came there. The hand-touch was not in compliment, but such a taking-possession clasp as Hazel had felt from it before; one that carried, as a hand-clasp can, its guaranty of protection, guidance, defence.
"Now, you see," continued Rollo's father, "that if these watches should get lost or injured in any way, the question whether the watchmaker would have to pay for them or not, would depend upon the degree of care it would have required to save them.
How did Rollo's father contrive to remove a part of the air from the china closet? Where did they expect that the air would be forced into the closet? How were they to make this effect visible? Did the experiment succeed? Suppose the key-hole had been stopped up; where would the air have been forced in? Suppose all the crevices had been closed. Is water compressible? Is air compressible?
