They were Richard, born December 21, 1376, and died issueless, June 24, 1396; Elizabeth, born 1379, wife of Sir William Marny; Philippa, born 1381, wife of Robert Passele; Alice, born at Kilquyt, September 1, 1384, wife of Guy de Saint Albino; Joan, born 1393, died February 21, 1400. Philippa became a widow, September 30, 1393, and died September 13, 1399. II., 53; 21 Ric.
"Saladin, King of Kings, to Melech Ric, the Lion of England.
Allevy transforms numbers into external objects, the number 1 being expressed by a tower, 2 by a bird, 3 by a camel, and so on. Pâris strikes the imagination by means of rebuses: an armchair garnished with clincher-nails will give "Clou, vis Clovis"; and, as the sound of frying makes "ric, ric," whitings in a stove will recall "Chilperic."
It was commonly believed amongst them, that the famous Malek Ric, Richard of England, the conqueror of Saladin, had come to life again, and was battling in the Spanish hosts that this, his second life, was a charmed one, and his body inaccessible to blow of scimitar or thrust of spear that after battle he ate the hearts and drank the blood of many young Moors for his supper: a thousand wild legends were told of Ivanhoe, indeed, so that the Morisco warriors came half vanquished into the field, and fell an easy prey to the Spaniards, who cut away among them without mercy.
"It is reward enough for me that so great a king as Melech Ric should thus speak to his servant. But now let me pray you to compose yourself again on the couch." "I must obey thee, Hakim," said the king. "But what mean these shouts and distant music in the camp?" The Marquis of Montserrat at that moment entered.
But I was not prepared for the discovery, made only last May, that Philippa Sergeaux was not the daughter of Earl Richard at all! In two charters recorded on a Close Roll for 20 Ric. II., she distinctly styles herself "daughter of Sir Edmund of Arundel, Knight," This was a younger brother of Earl Richard; and his wife was Sybil Montacute, a daughter of the Lollard House of Salisbury.
Saladin will hold treaty with none but the Melech Ric, and with him he will treat like a prince, or fight like a champion. To Richard he will yield such conditions of his free liberality as the swords of all Europe could never compel from him by force or terror.
And in its centre were a few words, or, rather abbreviations of words, in Latin, and some figures: In Para. Wrycestr. juxt. tumb. Ric. Jenk. ex cap. xxiii. xv. Bryce at first sight took them to be a copy of some inscription but his knowledge of Latin told him, a moment later, that instead of being an inscription, it was a direction. And a very plain direction, too! he read it easily.
It is to be observed, however, that Wycliffe himself limited his arguments strictly to the property of the clergy. See Milman's History of Latin Christianity, Vol. V. p. 508. Walsingham, p. 275, apud Lingard. 5 Ric. II. cap. 5 Wilkins, Concilia, III. 160-167. De Heretico comburendo. 2 Hen. IV. cap. 15. Stow, 330, 338. Rot. Parl.
Lingard says, that "there were rumours that if the prelates executed the decree of the king's courts, they would be excommunicated." Vol. III. p. 172. The language of the act of parliament, 16 Ric. II. cap. 5, is explicit that the sentence was pronounced. 16 Ric. II. cap. 5. Ibid. 16 Ric. II. cap. 5. Lewis, Life of Wycliffe.
