The editor of that paper greatly disliked the title, assuring me that the public would take Redux for the gentleman's surname, and was dissatisfied with me when I replied that I had no objection to them doing so.
Lady Laura Standish is the best character in Phineas Finn and its sequel Phineas Redux, of which I will speak here together. They are, in fact, but one novel though they were brought out at a considerable interval of time and in different form. The first was commenced in the St. Paul's Magazine in 1867, and the other was brought out in the Graphic in 1873.
He had come to London for a literary life, and when the Royalists were again in power he placed himself promptly on the winning side. His "Astraea Redux," a poem of welcome to Charles II, and his "Panegyric to his Sacred Majesty," breathe more devotion to "the old goat," as the king was known to his courtiers, than had his earlier poems to Puritanism.
Nay, as he was passing in the train along the Esterel mountains between Cannes and Frejus, he remarked a pretty house in an orange garden at the angle of a bay, and decided that this should be his Happy Valley. Astrea Redux; childhood was to come again! The idea has an air of simple nobility to me, not unworthy of Cincinnatus.
"How easy 'tis when destiny proves kind, With full spread sails to run before the wind!"* *Astroe Redux. So Dryden ran before the wind. About three years after the Restoration Dryden married an earl's daughter, Lady Elizabeth Howard. We know very little about their life together, but they had three children of whom they were very fond.

Rash editors think there is to be a reign of Astraea Redux in Prussia, by means of this young King; and forget to ask themselves, as the young King must by no means do, How far Astraea may be possible, for Prussia and him? At home, too, there is prophesying enough, vague hope enough, which for most part goes wide of the mark.
Next we have, in 1660, "Astraea Redux" on the "happy restoration" of Charles II. In this also we can forebode little of the full-grown Dryden but his defects. We see his tendency to exaggeration, and to confound physical with metaphysical, as where he says of the ships that brought home the royal brothers, that
His conduct of legal intricacies and the ways of lawyers is singularly correct; and the long and elaborate trial scene in Phineas Redux is a masterpiece of natural and faithful descriptions of an Old Bailey criminal trial in which "society" happens to be involved.
While at coll. he had written some not very successful verse. His Heroic Stanzas on the Death of Oliver Cromwell was his first considerable poem. It was followed, in 1660, by Astræa Redux, in honour of the Restoration.
