PS. Had they reached me in time, the following two items would have been included in the respective sections of the foregoing summary bibliography: Poesías originales de Fray Luis de León, ed. F. de Onís, San José de Costa Rica, 1920; Ad. XLVI, pp. 193-248. We are all of us familiar with the process of 'whitewashing' historical characters.
So the prophet says, Ps. cxliv., "The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works." If I give God praise in regard to such matters, and consider such doings good, holy, and excellent, then I sanctify Him in my heart.
Likewise Ps. 116, 11: I said in my haste, All men are liars, i.e., not thinking aright concerning God. Here our adversaries inveigh against Luther also because he wrote that, "Original sin remains after Baptism." They add that this article was justly condemned by Leo X. But His Imperial Majesty will find on this point a manifest slander.
All Saints-Day Sermons. My heart is smitten down, and withered like grass. I am even as a sparrow that sitteth alone on the housetop Ps. cii. 4, 6. My lovers and friends hast Thou put away from me, and hid mine acquaintance out of my sight Ps. lxxviii. 18. I looked on my right hand, and saw there was no man that would know me. I had no place to flee unto, and no man cared for my soul.
PS. My husband asks me to tell you to warn Lord Amblesham to keep out of his way or to assume some disguise so complete that he will not be recognised by him and horsewhipped. PPS. I am sending copies of this letter to the principal London and provincial newspapers. But enough! I never thought I should be so strong in this line. I had not foreseen such copiousness and fatal fluency.
All this seems a contradiction to the natural man, but it is not so to those whom Christ enlightens. They understand in proportion to their illumination, that it is possible to work out their salvation, yet to have it wrought out for them, to fear and tremble at the thought of judgment, yet to rejoice always in the Lord, and hope and pray for His coming. Ps. xlix. 2-10. Eccles. iii. 19.
It is no more! We can say of them, in the words of the royal Prophet: "I have seen the wicked highly exalted, and lifted up like the cedars of Libanus. And I passed by, and lo! he was not: and I sought him: and his place was not found."* Death laid its cold hand upon them, and put an end to their earthly happiness. * Ps. xxxvi. In heaven, that awful death shall be no more.
A friend relates the following incident, as received from the lips of a poor afflicted, crippled orphan boy, whose own experience is a practical illustration of the words: "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." Ps. xxvii 10.
"You are assuming a terrible responsibility. What! the duke is as ill as you say, ps ps ps. See no one? No consultation?" The Irishman threw up his arms as if to say: "What's the use?" The other insisted. It was absolutely essential that Brisset, Jousselin, Bouchereau, all the great men should be called in. "But you will frighten him to death."
So also when there is right teaching, and when the name is invoked in trouble or praised and thanked in prosperity etc.; all of which is comprehended summarily and commanded in the passage Ps. 50, 15: Call upon Me in the days of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.
