The complex of conditions over a continental area of rivers and lakes and mountain-chains is too vast for us to decipher; it inheres in the nature of things. It is one of the potencies and possibilities which matter possesses. We can take no step beyond that. There seems to me to be false reasoning in the argument from analogy which William James uses in his lectures on "Human Immortality."

There is no half-way house here possible without the deepest potencies of human nature suffering and failing to transform themselves from bud to blossom and fruit. At a later stage in our inquiry this question will recur in connection with the conception of the Godhead.

These Three Potencies are called Substance, Force, Darkness; or viewed rather for their moral colouring, Goodness, Passion, Inertness. Every material manifestation is a projection of substance into the empty space of darkness. Every mental state is either good, or passional, or inert.

An unknown quantity, a hope of progression, ideal love, and all true mental and spiritual ideals; aspiration to become that which we feel to be noble and true; the symbol of the monad, the soul which, receiving its life from the Sun the Ego is constantly revealing new forces and potencies of that God-life. Each soul's Ego is its maker and God.

The former base their Absolute upon the demands of logic, whilst Eucken bases all upon the demands and potencies of life; the pragmatists emphasise the primary place of the will in the development of the inner life, but they have certainly ignored the presence of over-individual norms, as the goal of volition, whilst Eucken holds to the necessity of both.

Closer observation, however, reveals points of differentiation and signs of the coming potencies of the other hormones. During the second period, up to puberty, these marks of the deeper underlying forces of the personality make themselves more and more felt. The thymus, like a brake that is becoming worn out, continues to function in a progressively weaker fashion.

Insistent questioning did develop, further, that "cold tea" was one of these; but cold tea did not make plain its recondite potencies did not explain why a beverage so unassuming to the taste should inspire one with a wish to partake of it continuously. "We might get him to make a barrel of it for the Sunday-school picnic," said Marcella, brightly, over her fourth cup.

The power of the family as an educational agency is in the fact that it is an organization of persons for personal purposes. When you take the persons away you remove all educational potencies. The depersonalized home is the modern menace. We have come to think that provided you throw furniture and food together in proper proportions you can produce a capable life.

To this day he thinks of what he termed years later in a sermon "savage and formidable Potencies lurking behind the souls of men, not evil perhaps in themselves, yet instinctively hostile to humanity as it exists." With his uncle he never discussed the matter in detail, for the barrier between the two types of mind made it difficult.

The parallelism of the potencies of nature, as we have developed it by leaving out of account the numerous differences between the various expositions of the Naturphilosophie, may be shown by a table: Copula 3. b. Indeter- |Magnetism | s |Repro- Female a. %1b. Transcendental Philosophy.%
