These ideas have not displaced the earlier apocalyptic language; but it is easy to see that the one or the other must recede into the background, and that the Pharisaic tradition will be the one to fade. The third group of Epistles Philippians, Colossians, and Ephesians are steeped in ideas which belong to Greek philosophy and the Greek mystery-religions.

From the Epistles of Ignatius, it may be concluded that he had read St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians, and that there existed in his time evangelical writings, though it cannot be shown that he has quoted from them. From Polycarp's Epistle to the Philippians, it appears that he had heard of St.

Now to God, even our Father, be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren that are with me salute you. All the saints salute you, specially those who are of Caesar's household. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. Unto the Philippians, written from Rome by Epaphroditus.

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and every tongue shall confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father! Philippians, 2, 10, 11.

Of one thing I am satisfied; that no man ever has, and I believe, no man ever can reconcile the change of the living and the resurrection of the dead recorded in Philippians and 1 Thessalonians with their respective contexts, so as to prove a general and immortal resurrection at the end of time.

I will still cast myself upon thy love. Lord, I have deserved all my misery; yet, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. Oh, my friends, let us hope that that prayer will go up, even out of the wildest heart, in God's good time; and that it will not go up in vain. PHILIPPIANS ii. 4. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. What mind?

Rejoice ye humble, and exult ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God if only ye walk in the truth. Psalm cxix. 137. Psalm xix. 9. Corinthians xiv. 33. Psalm xxi. 3. John xv. 19. Wisd. vi. 8. Revelation iv. 10; v. 14. Matthew xviii. 3. Philippians ii. 21. That all hope and trust is to be fixed in God alone

The old race of the Pharisees is by no means extinct; they were St Paul's great trouble, and are yet to be found in every religious community under the sun. The one only thing truly to reconcile all differences is, to walk in the light. So St Paul teaches us in his epistle to the Philippians, the third chapter and sixteenth verse.

And in Philippians 2:5 the Apostle saith, 'Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Also Revelation 2:8 Christ himself saith, I am 'the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive. And thus have I quoted some few scriptures to prove that the Son of Mary is the true God.

Paul, then, had been declaring to the Philippians the idea upon which, so far as it lay with him, his life was constructed, the thing for which he lived, to which the whole conscious effort of his being was directed, namely, to be in his very nature one with Christ, to become righteous as he is righteous; to die into his death, so that he should no more hold the slightest personal relation to evil, but be alive in every fibre to all that is pure, lovely, loving, beautiful, perfect.
