During the short period of these new performances at Her Majesty's Theatre, which was not equivalent to two complete Opera seasons, not merely did Madame Sontag go through the range of her old characters Susanna, Rosina, Desdemona, Donna Anna, and the like but she presented herself in seven or eight operas which had not existed when she left the stage Bellini's Sonnambula, Donizetti's Linda, La Figlia del Reggimento, Don Pasquale; Le Tre Nozze, of Signor Alary, La Tempesta, by M. Halévy the last two works involving what the French call 'creation, otherwise the production of a part never before represented.

This moment in the unfolding of character Mozart has arrested and eternalised for us in Cherubino's melodies; for it is the privilege of art to render things most fugitive and evanescent fixed imperishably in immortal form. This is indeed a rhapsodical production. Miranda was probably right. Had it not been for Pauline Lucca, I might not have philosophised the Nozze thus.

His next work, 'Le Nozze de Figaro' , was written to an adaptation of Beaumarchais's famous comedy 'Le Mariage de Figaro, which had been produced in Paris a few years before.

Let them go to the orchestra and hear Le Nozze di Figaro, Obéron, Freischutz and Orphée ... we are doing something for them by placing such models before them. The young composers who were thus politely invited to be seated included, among others, Bizet, Delibes, Massenet, and the writer of these lines. Massenet and I would have been satisfied with writing a ballet for the Opéra.

Lord Mount-Edgcumbe truly conjectured, that Mozart was led to make the bass so prominent a part in the Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro, by writing for a particular singer. The part of Figaro was, in fact, composed for Benucci.

Mozart had just written 'Le Nozze di Figaro' and 'Don Giovanni. He must not lag behind. He must not be conquered. In that career which he was about to dare to enter, he met two giants. Like the athlete who descends into the arena, he anointed his limbs and girded his loins for the fight."

There are three collections of brick-stamps in Rome; one, of little value, in the Kircherian museum; the second in the last room of the Vatican library, past the "Nozze aldobrandine;" the third and best in the Museo Municipale al Celio. This last contains over a thousand specimens, and a unique set of the products of Roman kilns.

Besides Susanna in "Le Nozze," she appeared as Vitellia in "La Clemenza di Tito," a serious rôle; and both in acting and singing these interpretations were praised by the most intelligent connoisseurs who had previously attacked the vicious redundancy of her style severely as nearly matchless.

We rise from seeing a performance of 'Le Nozze, with no consciousness of the art employed, but with a feeling of having assisted in an actual scene in real life. It is not until afterwards that the knowledge is forced upon us that this convincing presentment of nature is the result of a combination of the purest inspiration of genius with the highest development of art.

When the Count discovers his mistake he is thoroughly ashamed of himself, and his vows of amendment bring the piece to a happy conclusion. It seems hardly possible to write critically of the music of 'Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart had in a superabundant degree that power which is characteristic of our greatest novelists, of infusing the breath of life into his characters.
