If the idea of God has been obscured, and the power of its apprehension deadened, the man can only grope about helplessly, fashioning this explanation of nature and that all more or less false, but all dimly bearing witness to the two absolute facts, that there is an inner non-material self, and an external non-material God.
Our extension of the concept of evolution to the very elements of nature, whether these are of material or non-material kind, and our recognition of this evolution as leading in general from a more alert to a more inert condition, at once open the possibility of including in our scientific world-picture certain facts which have hitherto resisted any inclusion.

The fourth cause of degeneration of school English is the growing preponderance of concrete words for designating things of sense and physical acts, over the higher element of language that names and deals with concepts, ideas, and non-material things. Yet, despite apparent dissimilarities, there is such a likeness in many forms of ornamentation, as well as in the technique of the methods of production, that there seems to be ample proof of free borrowing, or of a common origin. The theory is that if we divide a molecule of water the parts are no longer water, but atoms of hydrogen and oxygen real bodies with weight and form, and storehouses of energy, but no longer divisible. Indeed, the atomic theory of matter leads us into a non-material world, or a world the inverse of the solid, three-dimensioned world that our senses reveal to us, or to matter in a fourth estate.
In other words, they express identical relational concepts in an identical manner. Change any of these features of the sentence and it becomes modified, slightly or seriously, in some purely relational, non-material regard. We feel that there is no relation established between either of them and what is already in the minds of the speaker and his auditor.
As being capable of an endless development and without a rival, may we not, must we not, consider them as ends in themselves? They are evidently what we are here for. Everything points to a spiritual end in animal evolution. The line of development is from the predominantly material to the predominance of the non-material. Not that the material is to be crowded out.
