That which the fighting Pontiff, Pius V., said when he heard of the victory is in character with everything which history has told us of this remarkable occupant of the chair of Saint Peter. It was short but very much to the point, consisting of the one sentence, "Fuit homo misus a Deo cui nomen erat Joannes."

And to those who persisted after this: "To live on charity, yet play Sir Bountiful, is to lie with the right hand. Giving another's to the poor, I should beguile them of their thanks, and cheat thee the true giver. Thus do thieves, whose boast it is they bleed the rich into the lap of the poor. Occasio avaritiae nomen pauperum."

For surely this is no idle nor fantastic saying. At the touch of a true artist, the plainest face turns comely. As subject-matter the face is no more than suggestive, as ground, merely a loom round which the beatus artifex may spin the threads of any golden fabric: 'Quae nunc nomen habent operosi signa Maronis Pondus iners quondam duraque massa fuit.

Sir Robert Filmer, Camden's friend, states that the English historian sent all that he was not suffered to print to his correspondent Thuanus, who printed it all faithfully in his annals without altering a word. On the tomb of our next author stands the epitaph Urna capit cineres, nomen non orbe tenetur.

His last recorded words were to a young lady who had begged for his blessing: "God bless you, my dear." The same day, December 13th, 1784, he gradually sank and died peacefully. He was laid in the Abbey by the side of Goldsmith, and the playful prediction has been amply fulfilled: Forsitan et nostrum nomen miscebitur istis.

The State, in the condition I have described it, was delivered into the hands of Lord Chatham a great and celebrated name; a name that keeps the name of this country respectable in every other on the globe. It may be truly called Clarum et venerabile nomen Gentibus, et multum nostrae quod proderat urbi.

For the rest, he was a good banterer, drinking and laughing with his regular customers, hat in hand always before the persons furnished with plenary indulgences entitled Sit nomen Domini benedictum, running them into expense, and proving to them, if need were, by sound argument, that wines were dear, and that whatever they might think, nothing was given away in Touraine, everything had to be bought, and, at the same time, paid for.

Eagerly that morning did they tell their fond parents of the good fairy and Child Island, of the beautiful palace and pretty houses, of the tiny musicians, the fairy slipper, and the strange Nomen. And as each little tongue prattled its pretty tale, the parents smiled and said to each other, "Truly our dear child has had a pleasant dream!"

That case and this are very different. Pareus observeth, hominem collective intelligi in that place, Gen. i. 26; and Junius observeth, nomen Adam de specie esse intelligendum. But each particular man, and not mankind alone, is permitted to labour six days.

It was, in fact, a strangely confused mingling of all human philosophies, all reveries, all human wisdom. Here and there one shone out from among the rest like a banner among lance heads. Generally, it was a brief Greek or Roman device, such as the Middle Ages knew so well how to formulate. Unde? Inde? Homo homini monstrurn-Ast'ra, castra, nomen, numen. Meya Bibklov, ueya xaxov.
