JOHNSON. 'I little thought, when I had the honour to meet your Lordship in London, that I should see you at Monboddo. After dinner, as the ladies were going away, Dr. Johnson would stand up. He insisted that politeness was of great consequence in society. Depend upon it, the want of it never fails to produce something disagreeable to one or other.

Modifications, unserviceable. Moggridge, J.T., on habits of spiders; on habits of ants. Moles, numerical proportion of the sexes in; battles of male. Mollienesia petenensis, sexual difference in. Mollusca, beautiful colours and shapes of; absence of secondary sexual characters in the. Molluscoida. Monacanthus scopas and M. Peronii. Monboddo, Lord, on music.

Johnson said a true word, it was when he replied to the Scottish judge Burnett, so well known to the world as Lord Monboddo.

I observed how curious it was to see an African in the north of Scotland, with little or no difference of manners from those of the natives. Dr Johnson laughed to see Gory and Joseph riding together most cordially. 'Those two fellows, said he, 'one from Africa, the other from Bohemia, seem quite at home. He was much pleased with Lord Monboddo to-day.

Boswell piloted him safely through a visit to Lord Monboddo, a man of real ability, though the proprietor of crochets as eccentric as Johnson's, and consequently divided from him by strong mutual prejudices. At Auchinleck he was less fortunate. The old laird, who was the staunchest of Whigs, had not relished his son's hero-worship. "There is nae hope for Jamie, mon; Jamie is gaen clean gyte.

Lord Monboddo himself trod an eccentric path in literature and philosophy; and our tutor, who spent his whole life in reading, withdrawing himself in that way from the anxieties incident to a narrow income and a large family, found, no doubt, a vast fund of interesting suggestions in Lord M.'s "Dissertations on the Origin of Language;" but to us he communicated only one section of the work.

I mentioned that Lord Monboddo told me, he awaked every morning at four, and then for his health got up and walked in his room naked, with the window open, which he called taking an air bath ; after which he went to bed again, and slept two hours more.

Johnson's Dictionary to know that a boy is "a male child," i.e., the male young of man, so he who would go to the depth of things, and know scientifically what is a boy, must be able to ascertain "what is a man." But for aught I know, my father may have been satisfied with Buffon on that score, or he may have sided with Monboddo.

The University Professors vied with each other in paying civilities to Johnson, the town of Aberdeen gave him its freedom, and among their hosts were magnates like the Duke of Argyll, Lord Errol and Lord Loudoun, who "jumped for joy" at their coming, and great men of law or learning like Lord Monboddo and Lord Elibank.

Lord Monboddo, the Scotch judge, who was a pioneer in regard to many modern ideas, had already in the eighteenth century realized the hygienic value of "air-baths," and he invented that now familiar name. It is said also, I know not on what authority, that he made his beautiful daughters take an air-bath naked on the terrace every morning.
