It was on this "seat of the oracles," as it was termed, that the god enthroned himself at the beginning of each year, and announced his will to mankind. But the mercy-seat was entitled "the holy hill" only because it was a miniature copy of "the holy hill" upon which the whole temple was erected.
Hence he is said to be far above all heavens, and to have a name above every name. Into the second, where the mercy-seat was, went the high priest alone, that is, personally, and the people by him, as he made intercession for them. This then must be done by those that will approach this throne of grace.
'In this place is one greater than the Temple, and the abiding of Jehovah above the mercy-seat was but a material symbol, shadowing and foretelling the true indwelling of all the fulness of the Godhead bodily in that true Tabernacle which the Lord hath pitched and not man.
"There is a place where spirits blend, Where friend holds fellowship with friend, A place than all beside more sweet, It is the blood-bought mercy-seat." The seventh mention is in this same ninth chapter of Luke, and records a third night of prayer.
Yet she laid it in his hand, and as their eyes met, he knew that as "there is a budding morrow in the midnight," so also there was a budding love in the rose-gift. "I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee." Acts xviii, 10. "There I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy-seat." Exod. xxv, 22. No man liveth unto himself.
He remembered now that the man's face had stared at him from far back in the church the night before a face full of the liveliest terror, though he had not been among those that fled to the mercy-seat. Acceding to the man's request, he followed him up a wooded path to his cabin.
It stood, as we are told a verse or two after my text, 'before the veil. A straight line drawn from the altar of sacrifice would have bisected the altar of incense as it passed into the mercy-seat and the glory. And that just tells us that the place of prayer in the Christian lift is that it is the direct way of coming close to God.
Thus, on the reception of worldly treasures, or in determining beforehand what proportion of our expected increase we shall appropriate to the Lord, we should go to Jesus with the same sweet simplicity and earnestness, crying, "Lord, what proportion of these thy bounties shall I share with the destitute?" failing not to devote that portion which our consciences, enlightened by scripture, shall dictate when kneeling before the mercy-seat.
'And having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things to himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. That is, when you enter into his presence, or approach by this flesh, the mercy-seat, or the throne of grace.
We glory in it, as the old Jews gloried in it, when the Roman soldiers, bursting through the Temple and into the Holy of Holies itself, paused in wonder and in awe when they beheld neither God, nor image of God, but blank yet all-suggestive the empty mercy-seat.
