Ko: What you have said in regard to the adoption of the constitutional monarchy as a means of saving the country from dismemberment is quite true, but I would like to have your opinion on the relative advantages and disadvantages of a republic and a monarchy, assuming that China adopts the scheme of a monarchy. Mr. Hu: I am only too glad to give you my humble opinion on this momentous question.
This privilege gave them an immense and dangerous influence in private life, whence the Hawaiian proverb: The priest's man is inviolable, the chief's man is the prey of death, Aole e make ko ke kahuna kanaka, o ko ke 'lii kanaka ke make. The kahuna, being clothed with supreme power in the exercise of his functions, alone could designate the victim suitable to appease the anger of the gods.
Oh yes, he succeeded." She also smiled involuntarily. "Poor Ko Ko was stowed away under the luggage-van; and after quite a lot of trouble he pulled him out. When it was all done the dog was quite unhurt and livelier than ever, but the Englishman had his finger almost bitten through. Ko Ko was a dear, but his teeth and his temper were both very sharp!" She laughed once more in soft amusement.
For the first time Loder involuntarily drew back into his corner of the couch. "I never guess," he said, brusquely. "Then I'll tell you. His hands were the hands of my Englishman! The rings covered the scar made by Ko Ko's teeth. I knew it instantly the second my eyes rested on it. It was the same scar that I had bound up dozens of times that I had seen healed before I left Santasalare."
"Burra suar!" it raged; then hailed imperiously, "Ko hai?" Where the lanterns clustered brightest, an active little figure in white waved a helmet, crying, "On deck! Where the devil does Maurice Heywood live?" "I'm up here," called that young man. For reply, the stranger began to skip among his cohorts, jerking out his white legs like a dancing marionette.
"There are Puyatye over there," said Hayoue. "Ko!" assented Zashue, then as if making a discovery he added, "They are hunting rabbits and hares." "You are right, surely they hunt rabbits," said Hayoue, his eyes brightening at the suggestion. "What shall we do?" Zashue asked. "We will go to them at once," said the other.
A desperate struggle ensued, and the Ko generals had to retreat to Harima, where they joined with Takauji, the latter having abandoned his expedition to Kyushu. Meanwhile, Yoshiakira, Takauji's eldest son, had escaped from Kyoto and entered his father's camp.
Of Minamoto origin, it was connected with the Hojo by marriage, and for generations its shitsuji had been a member of the Ko family. Ashikaga Takauji made Ko no Moronao his shitsuji, and a highly competent captain he proved himself.
Pao-yue had no alternative but to recite as follows: A spot in which the "Ko" fibre to bleach, as the fresh tide doth swell the waters green! A beauteous halo and a fragrant smell the man encompass who the cress did pluck! Chia Cheng, after this recital, nodded his head.
If China does not make any change in the form of government there is no hope for her becoming strong and rich; there is even no hope for her having a constitutional government. I say that China is doomed to perish. Mr. Ko: Why so? Mr. Hu: The republican form of government is responsible. The Chinese people are fond of good names, but they do not care much about the real welfare of the nation.
