In the spring of 1834 Parley P. Pratt and Lyman Wight were sent as messengers from the Saints in Clay county to Kirtland to tell the Prophet what had happened and to ask for further advice. Joseph, you may be sure, was very grieved to hear about the sufferings of the Saints, and he enquired of the Lord what should be done.
Of the lonely waiting, of the noises that had frightened them. "Oh, Mr. Kirtland! That armor is standing just as it did when it was daylight here, but truly we heard his sword rattle against his shield, and once " Rose's voice faltered. "Once," said Polly, taking up the story, "we thought he walked across the floor!"
Then he explained to her again, as in Kirtland, that he was in doubt concerning the marriage laws of the State. He had read in a book that many of the Jews and most of the Asiatics had more than one wife at the time of the apostles, and yet they had not preached against this as an evil. "They did not preach against slavery," said Susannah.
Kirtland belongs to the class of self-made naturalists who attain to greater eminence than others of equal talents and better advantages.
It is the special duty of the Seventies to travel and preach the gospel under the direction of the Twelve. As early as May, 1833, the Lord told Joseph that the Saints should build a house to his name. July 23, the foundation was laid. The Saints in Kirtland were not many, neither were they rich, and it was therefore a great task for them to build such a house as the temple.
Besides the Temple, the Mormons erected a number of substantial buildings, which show that they expected to remain in Kirtland. The residences of Smith and Rigdon are almost under the eaves of the Temple, and the theological seminary is now occupied by the Methodists for a church.
Miss Pray tried to arouse one of her two orphans her help: for answer they screamed aloud, sinking back into a sleep deep with snores of utter repose. "Sh! sh!" she said. "I'll go home with you, Jimmy." I had not taken off my great-coat. I went out of my room and followed them, unseen. In sight of the Kirtland home-light Jimmy ran in, glad.
"Never mind, Kirtland, she 's all thar'. The furderest time 't I ever looked ahead," said the voice of Shamgar, "was once in war time. All to once the thought come to me, 'Mebbe herrin'll be high tew. And sure enough herrin' was high!" "The furderest time 't I ever looked ahead " deliciously began Captain Leezur. "G'long! ye old fool! Git up! ye old skate!"
What revelation was given on Fishing river? 12. Where and when was Zion's camp disbanded? During the time that the Saints were having such a hard time in Missouri, the Church in and around Kirtland was growing in numbers and strength. Joseph with many of the elders went on missionary trips to various parts of the United States and Canada, and many new branches of the Church were organized.
"The wu'st case o' 'nebr'ancy this State 's ever known," said Captain Dan Kirtland, "was a man up to Callis jail, 't had been 'bleedged to take a spree on 'lemon extract; he sot fire t' everything he could lay his hand to." "Look a' that, will ye?" said Captain Pharo to the haughty Washingtonian; "yit you don't know nothin' 'bout ructions.
