And when the diseases came, every one in Kalevala, both young and old, fell ill of all sorts of illnesses, and Wainamoinen at first did not know whence all this evil had come.

Then one of the maidens of Kalevala suggested to Ilmarinen to make a moon of gold and a sun of silver, and to hang them up in the heavens; so Ilmarinen set to work. While he was forging them, Wainamoinen came and asked what he was working at, and so Ilmarinen told him that he was going to make a new sun and moon.

The 'Kalevala, as we possess it, is necessarily, though faintly, tinged with Christianity; and the peculiar vices which are here threatened with punishment are not those which would have been most likely to occur to the early heathen singers of this runot.
While the corn ripened, Wainamoinen rested from his labours, and took the task of Orpheus. 'He sang, says the 'Kalevala, of the origin of things, of the mysteries hidden from babes, that none may attain to in this sad life, in the hours of these perishable days.
When it is borne in mind that the most ancient and mythic of these legends have been taken down from the trembling memories of old squaws who never understood their inner meaning, or from ordinary senaps who had not thought of them since boyhood, it will be seen that the preservation of a mass of prose poems, equal in bulk to the Kalevala or Heldenbuch, is indeed almost miraculous.
The hand of the daughter of the mistress of Pohjola is what, each and all, the three sons of Kalevala strive to win, a hand which the mother of the owner will give to any one who can make for her and for Pohjola Sampo, Wainamoinen will not; but he knows of one who will, Illmarinen. Illmarinen makes it, and gains the mother's consent thereby. But the daughter requires another service.
