Having found myself rather worse, these two or three last days, I was obliged to take some ipecacuanha last night; and, what you will think odd, for a vomit, I brought it all up again in about an hour, to my great satisfaction and emolument, which is seldom the case in restitutions.
This came from the bad state of the camps and unwholesome food. The provincial surgeons seem to have been very little impressed with the importance of sanitary regulations, and to have thought it their business not to prevent disease, but only to cure it. The one grand essential in their eyes was a well-stocked medicine-chest, rich in exhaustless stores of rhubarb, ipecacuanha, and calomel.
Now the fact is, that Barere, far from opposing this ill-advised measure, was one of those who most eagerly supported it; that he described it from the tribune as wise and magnanimous; that he assigned, as his reasons for taking this view, some of those phrases in which orators of his class delight, and which, on all men who have the smallest insight into politics, produce an effect very similar to that of ipecacuanha.
The back and chest may be rubbed from time to time with a stimulating liniment, and an emetic of ipecacuanha wine may be given twice a day. The act of vomiting not only removes any of the mucus which is apt to accumulate in the larger air tubes, but the powerful inspirations which follow the effort tend to introduce air into the smallest vesicles of the lungs, and to do away with their collapse.
See ante, i. 313, note 4. On Aug. 16 he wrote to Mr. Levett: 'I have made nothing of the Ipecacuanha. Ante, ii. 282. Mr. Croker suggests that up is omitted after 'I gave. See post, p. 453. The MS. was 'put to the press' on June 20. Ante, ii. 278. The English version Psalm 36 begins, 'My heart sheweth me the wickedness of the ungodly, which has no relation to 'Dixit injustus. It begins,
One or two tea spoonfuls to be given every five minutes, until free vomiting be excited, first well shaking the bottle. The following is a palatable form for the mixture Take of Wine of Ipecacuanha, three drachms; Simple syrup, three drachms, Water, six drachms Make a Mixture. A tea-spoonful to be taken every two or three hours.
What NOT to do Do not give emetic tartar, do not apply leeches, do not keep the room very warm, do not give stimulants, do not omit to have always in the house either a 4 oz. bottle, or three or four 1 oz. bottles, of Ipecacuanha Wine. I have heard Child crowing mentioned as a formidable disease, would you describe the symptoms?
Take of peppermint water 5 oz., wine 6 drachms, sweet spirits of nitre 1/2 oz.; mix. Two tablespoonsful to be taken three times a-day in obstruction of urinary passages. Take of acetated liquor of ammonia 3 oz., ipecacuanha 10 gr., tincture of oil of peppermint 15 drops, distilled water 5 oz.; mix. Three tablespoonsful to be taken every two hours, until it produces the desired effects.
So away we went over the dewy paddocks, through broad-leaved grasses, and the pink balls of the sensitive-plants and blue Commelyna, and the upright negro Ipecacuanha, with its scarlet and yellow flowers, gayest and commonest of weeds; then down into a bamboo copse, and across a pebbly brook, and away toward the mountains.
Brooke and Wogale down with ague; gave Wogale ipecacuanha and quinine afterwards. Read Mota prayers in evening. All wounds going on well. Finished "Chaplet of Pearls," and wrote a little. 'Sunday, 24th. This morning the wind went round to N.E. and N. and then died away. We were 55 miles W. of the Torres Islands at noon. Brooke took English and Mota morning Prayers.
