W. Kelly. Finally, the Irish in Australia have done more than their share in the work of education and social service. Under Irish auspices several of the Catholic teaching congregations, including the Christian Brothers and the Presentation Nuns, were introduced, and their work has borne goodly fruit. A mighty power for good is the Hibernian Australasian Benefit Society.

I noted with interest in the Irish papers recently that the name of the Secretary of the Hibernian Order at the Bridge of Mayo, County Down, was "Brother Denvir." Our country sent over to Liverpool, besides sterling Nationalists, as bitter a colony of Irishmen I suppose we can scarcely deny the name to men born in Ireland as were, perhaps, to be found anywhere in the world.

Even when a farmer has a tidy sum of money on deposit with the bank at one per cent., if he wants to employ a sum for a short time, say for the purchase of cattle, he prefers to raise the money on a bill at six per cent. That is to say, the bank is lending him his own money at five per cent. a truly Hibernian trait, which it would be difficult to beat anywhere.

Grindle to give his name to the 'Westminster Magazine. When Bacon brought out his comic Irish novel of 'Barney Brallaghan, off went Bungay to Dublin, and produced his rollicking Hibernian story of 'Looney MacTwolter. When Doctor Hicks brought out his 'Wanderings in Mesopotamia' under Bacon's auspices, Bungay produced Professor Sandiman's 'Researches in Zahara; and Bungay is publishing his 'Pall Mall Gazette' as a counterpoise to Bacon's 'Whitehall Review. Let us go and hear about the 'Gazette. There may be a place for you in it, Pen, my boy.

They were of Hibernian parentage, and belonged to the class of newsboys trading with the different brigades. The younger lad was wiping his nose and eyes with a relic of a coat sleeve, and the elder was studying the points of the case, with a view to an elaborate defence. The sergeant produced a thick roll of bills and laid them upon the desk.

Two honest Hibernian members of the very common board of very uncommon councilmen, had, with that modesty so characteristic of them, paid me the high compliment of saying, that I had been justly styled the great northern political war horse.

"Behold, what I am longing for! I am longing for John Bulmer." Presently he sounded the gong upon his desk. And presently he said: "My adorable Pawsey, the great Duke of Ormskirk is now going to pay his respects to George Guelph, King of Britain, France, and Ireland, defender of the faith. Duke of Brunswick and Lunenburg, and supreme head of the Anglican and Hibernian Church. And to-morrow Mr.

Blessed be the Virgin, I have!" he continued, at the same time standing erect, with head and shoulders above the surface of the water. "All right!" cried Harry, imitating the upright attitude of the young Hibernian. "Bottom it must be, and bottom it is. Thank God for it!" Colin, with a similar grateful ejaculation, suspended his stroke, and stood upon his feet.

A natural and unnatural manner seemed struggling in all her gestures, and in every syllable that she articulated a naturally free, familiar, good-natured, precipitate, Irish manner, had been schooled, and schooled late in life, into a sober, cold, still, stiff deportment, which she mistook for English. A strong, Hibernian accent, she had, with infinite difficulty, changed into an English tone.

His employer, the gentleman whom Dennis had seen at the door, now appeared upon the scene in a towering passion, and scrupled not to heap maledictions upon the head of the unfortunate Hibernian. "What do you mean by rushing through the store in this mad style?" he demanded. "There's an impudent fellow outside a-doin' my work," said Pat.
