On ascending the mountain, we first meet with temperate forms of herbaceous plants, so low as 3,000 feet, where strawberries and violets begin to grow, but the former are tasteless, and the latter have very small and pale flowers. Weedy composites also begin to give a European aspect to the wayside herbage.
"Chum, you bounder," I shout as he is about to wade through the herbaceous border. He takes no notice; he struggles through to the other side. But a sudden thought strikes him, and he pushes his way back again. "Did you call me?" he says. "How DARE you walk over the flowers?" He comes up meekly. "I suppose I've done SOMETHING wrong," he says, "but I can't THINK what." I smack his head for him.
Finally we come to where there is less grass but more dead leaves and leaf mould, and here is the first real herbaceous flower of this spring, the dwarf white trillium, or wake-robin. How beautiful it looks, its three pure, waxy-white petals, its six golden anthers and three long styles, and its pretty whorl of three ovate leaves, at the summit of a stem about four inches high.
He attempted many sorts of grafting flute-graft, crown-graft, shield-graft, herbaceous grafting, and whip-grafting. With what care he adjusted the two libers! how he tightened the ligatures! and what a heap of ointment it took to cover them again! Twice a day he took his watering-pot and swung it over the plants as if he would have shed incense over them.
This is of herbaceous growth, and remarkable for the large cream-coloured flower bracts, and showy red fruit. It is a small growing tree, with narrow, pointed leaves, and greyish coloured, smooth bark. Like many of its fellows, this species likes rather moist ground.
One thing is very certain, however, it is time wasted to plant a hardy garden of herbaceous plants in shallow soil. It is well to keep a tabulated list of these old-time perennials in the Garden Boke, so that in the feverish haste and excitement of the planting season a mere glance will be a reminder of height, colour, and time of bloom.
Excepting those which were launched directly into the channels of swift rivers, scarcely one of their wedged and interlacing boulders has moved since the day of their creation; and though mostly made up of huge blocks of granite, many of them from ten to fifty feet cube, weighing thousands of tons with only a few small chips, trees and shrubs make out to live and thrive on them and even delicate herbaceous plants draperia, collomia, zauschneria, etc., soothing and coloring their wild rugged slopes with gardens and groves.
Probably it is as a protection from herbivorous animals, to prevent them browsing upon the twigs and small branches where herbaceous vegetation is dried up. Small armadillos abound near these rocky knolls, and are said to feed on ants and other insects.
By boiling, even for a little time, their fine flavour is destroyed. A wine is also made of the flowers, which is given as an opiate. PRUNELLA vulgaris. SELFHEAL. The Leaves. It has an herbaceous roughish taste, and hence stands recommended in haemorrhages and alvine fluxes.
These have an herbaceous, roughish taste: they have long been celebrated for sanative virtues, both internally and externally; nevertheless their effects, in any intention, are not considerable enough to gain them a place in the present practice. SAPONARIA officinalis. SOAPWORT. The Herb and Root.
