Glancing at it, the son of Isfendiar replied: "Take off the cross, and you show me a miniature standard of the Silihdars, my Lord's guard of the Palace." Then looking the Count full in the face, he added: "Under other conditions I should salute you Mirza, Emir of the Hajj." "I have given you my name and title. Answer."
A caravan so extensive being an unusual event, small parties carrying only grain come in once or twice a week, the citizens abandoned even their favourite game of ball, with an eye to speculation. Presently they entered the streets, where we witnessed their frantic dance in presence of the Hajj and other authorities.
The Hajj strongly recommended us to one of the principal families of the Gudabirsi tribe, who would pass us on to their brother-in-law Adan, the Gerad or prince of the Girhi; and he, in due time, to his kinsman the Amir of Harar. The chain was commenced by placing us under the protection of one Raghe, a petty Eesa chief of the Mummasan clan.
"Nay," said the Emir, "gold in large amount was found on his person." "But he had other property doubtless?" "Of great value." "What disposition was made of it?" "It was brought to me, and is now with other stores in my tent; a law of ancient institution vesting it in the Emir El Hajj." The countenance of the Jew became serious. "The ownership was not in my thought," he said, waving his hand.
Ahmed's principal occupations are spying his many stalwart cousins, indulging in vain fears of the English, the Turks, and the Hajj Sharmarkay, and amassing treasure by commerce and escheats.
The line is continued, after a considerable break, by the two blue and conical peaks in the Tihamat-Jahaniyyah, known as the Jebelayn el-Ral. They are divided and drained to the Wady Hamz by the broad Wady el-Sula'; and the latter is the short cut down which the Egyptian Hajj, returning northwards from El-Medinah, debouches upon the maritime plain of South Midian.
They are reconciled to it by its beneficial effects, especially after and before a journey. Good water, however, can be procured in any of the Fiumaras intersecting the plain; when the Hajj Sharmarkay's towers commanded the town wells, the people sank pits in low ground a few hundred yards distant, and procured a purer beverage.
The Hajj, after speaking big, had the weakness to let the murderer depart alive: this measure, like peace-policy in general, is the best and surest way to encourage bloodshed and mutilation. But a few months before, an Eesa Bedouin enticed out of the gates a boy about fifteen, and slaughtered him for the sake of wearing the feather.
By the good aid of the Hajj and our sweetmeats, he was persuaded, for the moderate consideration of ten Tobes , to accompany us to the frontier of his clan, distant about fifty miles, to introduce us to the Gudabirsi, and to provide us with three men as servants, and a suitable escort, a score or so, in dangerous places.
Yet, conjoined to this truly savage incapability of conceiving the idea of a Supreme Being, they believe in the most ridiculous exaggerations: many will not affront a common pilgrim, for fear of being killed by a glance or a word. Our supper, also provided by the hospitable Hajj, is the counterpart of the midday dinner.
