It was the morning, at late getting-up times in a Pullman, when the accident happened. The car being crowded, I had been forced to accept an upper berth. It was only the other day. A few years ago. I was an old man then. We were coming up from Florida. It was a collision on a high trestle.
Meanwhile the tea-table had been silently gathering on its snowy plateau the delicate china, the golden butter, the loaf of faultless cake, a plate of crullers or wonders, as a sort of sweet fried cake was commonly called, tea-rusks, light as a puff, and shining on top with a varnish of egg, jellies of apple and quince quivering in amber clearness, whitest and purest honey in the comb, in short, everything that could go to the getting-up of a most faultless tea.
Out of this delight springs the toy-theatre, there it is, with its familiar proscenium, and ladies in feathers, in the boxes! and all its attendant occupation with paste and glue, and gum, and water colours, in the getting-up of The Miller and his Men, and Elizabeth, or the Exile of Siberia. But hark! The Waits are playing, and they break my childish sleep!
"NOTHING! they called it NOTHING to have to get out of a warm bed into the fresh morning air, and dress before breakfast! "Well, my dears," pursued Aunt Judy, after waiting here a few seconds, to see if anybody would groan, "I shall take it for granted you feel for the GETTING-UP misery as well as the GOING-TO-BED one, although you have not groaned as I expected.
Though as happy a woman as you could have found in Lambeth, she seldom had a moment of leisure from getting-up to bedtime. Her kind are very numerous. Such women pass through a whole summer without an hour of rest in the sunshine, and often through a married lifetime without going beyond the circle of neighbouring streets. But the bonnet delighted her.
But on this happy morning he did not wait for orders, but rose promptly, though it still wanted more than half an hour to getting-up time.
With quivering lips and flushed face, half shame, half anger, you dash beneath the clothes, and wish the floor would open beneath you. When the getting-up bell sounds, you slink into your clothes amid the titters of your companions.
Bread-making can be cultivated to any extent as a fine art and the various kinds of biscuit, tea-rusks, twists, rolls, into which bread may be made, are much better worth a housekeeper's ambition than the getting-up of rich and expensive cake or confections. There are also varieties of material which are rich in good effects.
Mac looked up. But the Boy was too tired to play the big fish any longer. "I wonder if you'll do something for me." He watched with a sinking heart Mac's sharp uprising from the worshipful attitude. It was not like any other mortal's gradual, many-jointed getting-up; it was more like the sudden springing out of the big blade of a clasp-knife. "What's your game?"
The two men grunted acquiescence and took up the chair, and went along the causeway, which certainly answered Miss Pole's kind purpose of saving Miss Matty's bones; for it was covered with soft, thick mud, and even a fall there would have been easy till the getting-up came, when there might have been some difficulty in extrication.
