This lane could hardly be dignified by the name of street as yet, it was so very quiet. It had been opened and named scarcely a year back and it was bordered mostly by open gardens or fenced-in building lots. There were four houses in this street, two by two opposite each other, and another, an old-fashioned manor house, lying almost hidden in its great garden.
The taxi continued over the City and its three "towns" the spacetown, the bureaucrat's town, and the miner's town and finally settled gently down in the foothills beyond. There was a clearing beneath them, with a fenced-in surface. A medic looked up as they got out. "Differences to settle, gentlemen and my lady? Interne Pyuf at your service. There were great square fields of stubble, fenced-in patches of pasture-land, small oases of woodland, houses and barns and silos as far as the eye could reach, and always the huge red barns dwarfed the houses in which the farmers dwelt. He passed the four houses at the end of the street he was on the left sidewalk and then he came to two fenced-in building lots. These interested him. Almost as soon as he left the town he was in the desert; a detached ranch, a suggestion of a road, a fenced-in cotton-field or two, an irrigation ditch, and then sand. He was soft from months of inaction, from the cactus whisky of Mexico, too, that ate into a man like a corrosive acid.
