"Then do not, dear father," she said, lifting to his eyes full of ardent love and sympathy; "try to leave it all with the dear Master, and he will fulfil to you his precious promise, 'As thy days, so shall thy strength be. Has it not ever been the testimony of all his saints concerning his precious promises that not one faileth?" "Yes," he said, "and so will it ever be.
He calleth all their millions by name, and for the greatness of his power not one faileth to come. Number the stars of a clear Eastern sky, if you are able. So multitudinous and enduring shall the influence of one good man be. Suppose one has been at sea a month. He has tacked to every point of the compass, been driven by gales, becalmed in doldrums.
And thus it begets a religion for itself; for what else is the professional superstition of the sailor? Since you must be a believer in the supernatural, let your belief be true; let your trust be on Him who faileth not your anchor within the vail; and all shall be well, be your destiny for this world what it may." We parted for the night, and I saw him no more.
"Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth."
Raise not thy voice in dissent, O! my brother, for behold we have made good time, and water faileth us not." And well was it that they turned aside, and shouted as they approached so that only one beak had time to tear a strip of flesh from beneath the naked shoulder, ere the flock of vultures rose, hovered a second, and were gone.
"He calleth them all by their names; for that he is strong in power, not one faileth. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?"
Then he dismissed his servants and bade the doors be shut; after which he said to the jeweller, "By Allah, O my brother, I have not closed my eyes since the day I saw thee last; for the slave-girl came to me yesterday with a sealed letter from her mistress Shams al-Nahar;" and went on to tell him all that had passed with her, adding, "By the Lord, I am indeed perplexed concerning mine affair and my patience faileth me: for Abu al-Hasan was a comforter who cheered me because he knew the slave-girl."
And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth.
Love never faileth: but if there be prophetic gifts, they shall be no more; if tongues, they shall cease; if science, it shall vanish away. For we know partially, and prophesy partially. But when that which is perfect cometh, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Then, as to the strife after wealth, into which all are now rushing so earnestly, the Lord teaches: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth. Whosoever of you forsaketh not all that he hath can not be my disciple. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves with bags that wax not old a treasure in heaven that faileth not."
