Through that long night we pushed on as fast was we could travel, only stopping now and again for a few minutes to rest the bearers of the Holy Flower. Indeed at times Mrs. Eversley relieved her husband at this task, but Stephen, being very strong, carried his end of the stretcher throughout the whole journey.
The Council, however, thought there were grounds for reconsidering the decision, and to strengthen the case for admission, Kingsley's opinion was asked. He replied: "EVERSLEY, May 31, 1850.
She wanted me to see her sister, poor Mrs. Eversley, who is ill at her house. I promised to look in to-morrow." "I've just been telling Nance how beautiful I think Mrs. Wyeth is," said Bernal. "She's rare, with that face of the low-browed Greek. It's one of the memories I shall take back to my Eve-less Eden." "She is beautiful," said Nancy.
Alton Locke Charles Kingsley, English novelist, poet, and clergyman, was born June 12, 1819, and died Jan. 23, 1875. The son of the rector of Chelsea, London, Kingsley went from King's College, London, to Cambridge, taking his B.A. degree in 1842, and becoming rector of Eversley in 1844. He was made one of the Queen's chaplains in 1859, and in 1873 was appointed canon of Westminster.
In fact" the colour was returning to her face, and her smile became more natural "I thought so myself a few minutes ago. Let us set to work at once!" Toby burst into a rude whoop of admiration and flung a ball of string into the air. "Miss Eversley, well done! Well done!" he gasped. "You you deserve a V.C.!" "Indeed I don't," she returned. "I have been running away hard."
And so we shall live for ever under our great taskmaster's eye, and find out that that eye is not merely the eye of a just judge, not merely the eye of a bountiful king, but more the eye of a loving and merciful Saviour, in whose presence is life even here on earth; and at whose right hand, even in this sinful world, are pleasures for evermore. Eversley. 1845. Hebrews xiii. 8.
It may astonish you to know that the Government turned the scale. Those who had incurred the penalty of rashness were left to pay it. That, Miss Eversley, is all I have to say. You will be good enough to remember that I have said it at your request and not in my own defence." He ceased to speak as abruptly as he had begun.
You and Charles were the best and truest friends I ever had. We shall soon be all together again. God bless you now and in eternity. "Your affectionate. "Cowley Powles is here. It was he who first took me to Eversley." It was when he came to London that Froude enlarged the circle of his friends, Carlyle being the greatest and the chief.
Other literary associations of the Winchester country are those furnished by Hursley, where John Keble was vicar; by Otterbourne, the home for many years of Charlotte Yonge; and by Eversley, where Winchester's immortal son, Charles Kingsley, lies buried. Each succeeding visit to Winchester can only strengthen one's love for the city, and one's reverence for the Cathedral in its midst.
And you will love life; for life will be full to you of hope, of work, of duty, of interest, of lessons without number. And you will see good days; for all days will seem good to you, even those which seem to the world bad days of affliction and distress. And so the peace of God will keep you in Jesus Christ, in this life, and in the life to come. Amen. Eversley. 1856. St. John i. 16, 17.
