It had been my intention to make a few extracts from this portion of the volume showing later developments in the legends of the Drachenfels, and others of more than ordinary interest, but I find that with the departure of Boswell for the night the treasured hand-book disappeared with him; but, as I have already stated, if I can secure his consent to do so I will some day have the book copied off on more material substance than that employed in the original manuscript, so that the useful little tome may be printed and scattered broadcast over a waiting and appreciative world.

The range consists of a succession of conical hills sometimes flat-topped as in the case of Petersberg; and at the Drachenfels, near the centre of the range it presents to the river a bold front of precipitous cliffs of trachyte porphyry.

She entered the convent at Nonnenwerth, resolved to dedicate her life to Heaven, since the joys of earth had fled. Her afflicted parents reluctantly acquiesced in this proposal. Daily they beheld their daughter waving her hand to them as she entered the chapel. Suddenly there appeared before the gates of Drachenfels a troop of cavaliers, whose armour shone brilliantly in the sun.

Now this only is left, my son; that thou bear living testimony to the truth of my statement, as I bear it to the folly! At his host’s bidding Roland put off his armour, but even in his own room a vision of maidenly beauty haunted him, thereby showing how subtly the young girl’s charms had wound themselves around the knight’s heart. Roland remained for some time with the Lord of Drachenfels, fascinated more and more by the grace and beauty of his winsome daughter.

On the return journey, after getting out of the train at the railway station and crossing the Rhine, I missed my letter-case containing a note for two hundred marks; it had slipped out of my overcoat pocket. Two gentlemen who had joined us on the way from the Drachenfels immediately offered to retrace their steps, a somewhat arduous undertaking, to hunt for the lost object.

The cavern of the dragon may be seen from the Rhine half way up the hill. "This dragon was slain by Sigfried, the hero from the Low Countries, who, having bathed himself in its blood, became invulnerable." The summit of Drachenfels commands one of the noblest prospects of the Rhine.

Clinch's sceptical mind. He forgot himself and his surroundings. "And that story of the Drachenfels?" he asked insinuatingly, "the dragon, you know. Was he too " The baron grinned. "A boar transformed by the drunken brains of the Bauers of the Siebengebirge. Ach Gott!

But at Drachenfels Castle sad faces and tearful eyes told a tale of sorrow, for it had been announced that Roland was dead. The maid’s rosy cheeks grew pale with grief; nothing could console her; for was not her hero departed from her for ever? In the intensity of her anguish she sought relief in prayer and found a refuge in religion.
