A woman in deep mourning rose suddenly out of a chair by the fire and came towards them. "Hughie!" she said. It was Lady Newhaven. It is probable that none of the tableaux she had arranged were quite so dramatic as this one, in which she had not reckoned on that elaborate figure in the door-way.
As he reached the door-way at the front of the house he was greeted with a shout from assembled Monterey. The plaza was gay with beaming faces and bright attire.
The door was thrown open to its widest extent, and in the centre of the door-way stood a short stout-built man, and the very broadest I ever beheld staring at us with bold inquiring eyes. His salutation was something to this effect. 'What the hell do you gay fellows want with me? What the blazes is this humbugging letter about? My son, and be hanged! What do you know of my son?
At the north end of Cross-court there yet stands a portal, of some architectural pretensions, though reduced to humble use, serving at present for an entrance to a printing-office. This old door-way, if you are young, reader, you may not know was the identical pit entrance to old Drury Garrick's Drury all of it that is left.
"Well, Ben," said Frank, "if you will watch this fellow, Harry and I will see what we can do for Ned." So saying, he went carefully around one side of the boat-house, and Harry disappeared around the other. Frank reached the end of the house first, and discovered the coast-guard standing in the door-way, as motionless as a statue.
One night I woke; I felt that the room was darkly rich with the star-lighted gloom, but I could see nothing, for all the soft, cool linen folds; and lying there half-conscious for a time, I seemed to feel some presence in the door-way there. "Angus, is that you?" I asked. "Oh, Ailie darling!" he cried, and came forward and fell on his knees by my side, and covered my hands with his tears.
It was five o'clock; the chimes had played the hour; the laborers were going to the fields, and the dairy-maids were beginning their work. In the door-way of the cottage stood a tall, angular woman, shading her flushed and heated face from the sun's rays with her hand. "Daisy, Daisy!" she calls, in a harsh, rasping voice, "where are you, you good-for-nothing lazy girl?
Buckingham followed the pair, and when he had reached his own door-way he continued to follow them with his eyes until they were lost at a bend in the street. Then he entered the house where he lodged, and sat down in his study. He was greatly pleased with this little turn in affairs. "That is one step further in my story," he said to himself, for there was no one else to say it to.
Stradella met his wife with a happy smile and nodded a greeting to Don Alberto, who remained in the door-way. 'Can you take me home at once? Ortensia asked. 'Or must you go in? Stradella saw her look of distress as he took her outstretched hand in both of his. 'I am not wanted, am I? he asked, looking at young Altieri. 'My wife wishes to go home, you see
A door-way in a blank wall, once whitewashed, gives access to a kind of lobby, such as might precede the entrance to some grandee's house, but instead of being neat and clean, it is filthy and dank, and an unwholesome odour pervades the air. On a low bench at the far end lie a guard or two in dirty garments, fitting ornaments for such a place.
