What good is it, when it does come? The same questions apply to conscience, loyalty, responsibility, right and wrong. Whence do they come and what are they good for? These questions are simple to ask but when one attempts to answer them in a simple, convincing way, they are found to be full of hidden depths and complexities.

"It's a charming spot," Sylvia exclaimed. "Can't we have tea outside?" Bland ordered it and they sat down to a neatly-served meal. The evening was warm and very still and clear. A rattle of wheels reached them from somewhere far down the road and they could hear the faint splash of water in the depths of the ravine. "This is really delightful," murmured Sylvia, when the table had been cleared.

This answered sufficiently well for the first four or five steps; but presently I found my imagination growing terribly excited by thoughts of the vast depths yet to be descended, and the precarious nature of the pegs and soapstone holes which were my only support.

At last Matsou-San and Donata-San make their appearance from the tranquil depths of their bonze-house. They are dressed in black crape and their heads are shaved.

Some of them had been four days hungry, cut off from their supplies by our barrage fire, and intense hunger gave them a kind of vitality when food appeared. John's answer goes down to the depths, for his notion of love is the response of the believing soul to the love of God which was manifested on the Cross of Calvary.

Such was the character of this man's temperament. The cottage was a happy place; only she never fathomed the depths of that only. If in these days she essayed at times to do so, she gave full credit to the Dread which rose ever before her rose like a ghost! "Ah, yes," said Esther, sadly, resuming the conversation as if there had been no break, "but this is a Judaism of your own creation. The real Judaism is a religion of pots and pans. It does not call to the soul's depths like Christianity." "Again, it is a question of the point of view taken.
