She could not lie to him and humanly she wished that it were to-morrow, the day after, the day after that, when it would be over and done for, put away, covered by woes of his own, though inevitably to be dragged out again and shown her, and shown her, too, with the unconscious cruelty that those who love you display. It would be crucifying, but there was no help for it.
"Then don't try any more," she indifferently replied, turning to go in; but he checked her with another threat and by the way she flinched I knew that he meant it. "If you go in that door till I'm through," he bellowed, "that crucifying comes off in ten minutes right on this spot where you can hear the beggar squeal!"
You are continually crucifying Christ all over your planet in the same way that you crucified Jesus Christ, for you either deny Him or pervert His Truth to suit your selfishness. All of the people on Mars have lived on other planets before, except your Earth. The Earth has not advanced enough to be placed in the line of progression yet.
I just cling to his feet and pray with tears that I may not disgrace him as we Christians have been doing by our behaviour in India. We go on crucifying Christ while we long to proclaim the Power of His resurrection by which He has conquered untruth and unrighteousness.
They had had plenty of practice in crucifying Jews. It was part of their ordinary work in these troublesome times, and this was just one more. Think of what a corporal's guard of rough English soldiers, out in Northern India, would think if they were bidden to hang a native who was charged with rebellion against the British Government.
So I pours out half a cupful, and I sez, 'Here, you drink that, and it'll stop 'em crucifying Shepherd Toller. He drinks it down at a gulp, and then he sez, 'They've took him down. But I'm afraid he's terrible burnt. He soon got quiet and lay down and went to sleep. "He must ha' slep' till six in the mornin', when he got up. 'My head's achin' awful, he sez.
It was a long story, with infinite detail, crucifying him with cheap ink; making him appear a ruthless, heartless monster, lusting for the spilled blood of the innocent. Bonbright looked up to meet Lightener's eyes. "It it isn't fair," he said, chokingly. "Fairness," said Lightener, almost with gentleness, "is expected only when we are young." "But I didn't.... I tried to stop them."
Matter-of-fact indifference as to a piece of military duty, and shameless greed, impelled the legionaries to cast lots for the clothes stripped from a living man. What did the crucifying of another Jew or two matter to them?
The Apostle is incensed at the presumptuousness of any person who thinks he can perform the Law of God to his own salvation. He charges that person with the atrocity of crucifying anew the Son of God. This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? There is a touch of irony in these words of the Apostle.
He seems to have partaken of it, although He had refused the mixture that had been before offered Him merely to deaden His pain. To bear that pain was the lofty duty set before Him, and so He would not turn aside from it one hair's breadth. But He humbled Himself to receive what was necessary from the very hands that had been crucifying Him.
