The ground, upon which the Quakers decline the use of the ordinary ceremonies just mentioned, is, the honours are the honours of the world. Now, as that these of the world, they consider them as objectionable on several accounts. First, they are no more the criterions of obeisance and respect, than mourning garments are the criterions of sorrow.
The evidence is also derived from hostile witnesses, who in all other cases consider fertility and sterility as safe criterions of specific distinction. Gartner kept, during several years, a dwarf kind of maize with yellow seeds, and a tall variety with red seeds growing near each other in his garden; and although these plants have separated sexes, they never naturally crossed.
Once masters of logic, they passed in review the different criterions; first, that of common sense. If the individual can know nothing, why should all individuals know more? An error, were it a hundred thousand years old, does not by the mere fact of its being old constitute truth. The multitude invariably pursues the path of routine. It is, on the contrary, the few who are guided by progress.
'I speak advisedly, said he, in continuation; 'there is one Platitude. 'And I hope there is only one, said I; 'you surely would not adduce the likes and dislikes of that poor silly fellow as the criterions of the opinions of any party?
Glowry; the north-eastern tower was appropriated to the servants, whom Mr. Glowry always chose by one of two criterions a long face or a dismal name. The main building was divided into room of state, spacious apartments for feasting, and numerous bedrooms for visitors, who, however, were few. Occasional visits were paid by Mr. and Mrs.
The liberal and enlightened monikin is easily to be distinguished from all of this clique. He is neither ashamed of, nor bigoted in favor of any usages, simply because they are domestic. With him the criterions of merit are propriety, taste, expediency, and fitness.
This is like giving a loaded gun to a boy and saying, 'Shoot away! ... No matter in which direction you point your aim, . . shoot yourself if you like, and others too, anyhow, you've GOT the gun! Of course there are a few fellows who have occasionally drawn up a list of books as suitable for everybody's perusal, but then these lists cannot be taken as true criterions, as they all differ from one another as much as church sects.
The main thing is not the amount of mere knowledge or information held in memory for future delivery, but the spirit and attitude of it all. The extent to which children's minds are made awake and sensitive, and the extent to which they are inspired to pursue with zest and spirit any new problem are the best criterions of success in teaching.
For my part, I must confess I am totally altered; and, instead of being a warm partisan of liberty, now admire nothing but despotism. You will naturally ask, what place I have gotten, or what bribe I have taken? Those are the criterions of political changes in England but, as my conversion is of foreign extraction, I shall not be the richer for it.
As it may be satisfactory to know more particularly the progress of these gales, and the effect they have upon the barometer and sympiesometer, I give the details of two that were experienced in H.M.S. Beagle, one at Swan River, in the beginning of June 1838, the other at Houtman's Abrolhos, in the beginning of May 1840; they may be taken as fair criterions of the strength and duration of these gales, the latter having been experienced, probably, within 5 degrees of their northern limit, and the former near the southern extreme of the west coast.
