It then becomes quite quiet, the cilia disappear, it assumes a spherical form, and surrounds itself with a distinct, though delicate, membranous coat. A protuberance then grows out from one side of the sphere, and rapidly increasing in length, assumes the character of a hypha.

The eyebrows were merely indicated by a few fine and very short hairs; the free edges of the eyelids were without cilia, but the bulb of each of these was indicated by a small, whitish point. The beard was so thin and weak that Beauvais clipped it off only every three weeks. A few straggling hairs were observed on the breast and pubic region, as in young people on the approach of puberty.

The normal nose remedies all these defects. The mucous membrane in the nasal passages contains cilia, which catch the dust. The nasal passages are very tortuous so that during its journey through them the air is warmed and takes up moisture.

Käte had given her a good character; it was still not clear to the girl why she had been dismissed, even when she stood in the street. The lady wanted an older, more experienced maid that was what she had said but Cilia did not quite believe that, she felt vaguely that there was another reason: she simply did not like her.

Even a polype makes some show of reason by moving its cilia in one mode when it desires to suck in food, and in another when it merely wishes to move on; while it is scarcely possible for an unprejudiced spectator to doubt of its being by a rational deduction from experience that a dog knows that it will get kicked if it presume to snatch at the meat on its master's plate, instead of waiting for the scraps he may be pleased to throw to it when he has done.

True, the blows of the chopper resounded, he could hear the echo across the lake, and nothing deterred Cilia from doing her work he admired the girl's calmness but the menace that lay in the silence did not grow any less. The distracted man shuddered again and again: no, he knew it now oh, how distinctly he felt it nobody could do anything against that invisible power. Everything was in vain.

The animal is the berve. It has ciliated bands round it, like the marks on a melon. What a beautiful iridescent light plays over them! They enable it to move over the water, while with its long tentacles it fishes for its food. At night those cilia shine with a phosphorescent light, and have a very beautiful appearance.

For awhile the little creature dances freely through the water, and leads a gay, roving life; but at last it prepares to 'settle; selects a fitting locality; applies one extremity of its body to the surface of stone or weed, and becomes attached. And now another change passes over it. The cilia, no longer needed, disappear.

After passing through certain changes here, the egg issues from the maternal pouch as an oval body, clothed with cilia an animalcule in external aspect, and as unlike its parent as can well be imagined.

At about ten inches from one of the knees, the cilia forming that leg had abruptly doubled backward and inward upon their course of growth. The figure lacked the left foot. There was but one inference the obvious one; but in the ensuing excitement as many courses of action were proposed as there were incapable counselors.
