In every case the essence of the Christiania is that the swing should be rapid, and that the preliminary stemming or diverging of the skis should be as slight as possible. A turn started by pronounced stemming and completed as a Christiania should not be passed. Continuous Turns are sometimes known as "downhill turns."

To all these charms were added an inexhaustible fund of good humor, a refined and liberal nature, and a generous and self-sacrificing disposition. Sylvius Hogg, of Christiania no further recommendation was needed. That told the whole story.

At all events, he would see for himself, and in June, 1885, instead of stopping at Gossensass, he pushed bravely on and landed in Christiania. At first all went well, but from the very beginning of the visit he observed, or thought he observed, awkward phenomena. The country was thrilled with political excitement, and it vibrated with rhetorical resolutions which seemed to Ibsen very empty.

So comfortable has travelling in Norway been made for foreigners that there is no difficulty in going anywhere. There is a railway from Christiania to Bergen, and another from Christiania to Trondhjem. There are regular steamers on all the fjords and along the coast, even up to the North Cape and beyond.

Our own medical outfit, which was bought in Christiania, and according to the vendor's statement unusually well packed, became in a short time so damaged that the whole of it is now entirely spoilt. The sledging provisions must be mentioned briefly. I have already spoken of the pemmican.

"For your daughter." "For me!" cried Hulda. "It is a letter from Ole! I am sure it is a letter that came by way of Christiania. My brother did not want me to be kept waiting." Hulda had snatched the letter from the boy's hand, and now taking it to the table upon which her mother had deposited the candle, she examined the address. "Yes, it is from him. It is certainly from him!

And there is no passenger ship going to Christiania or Bergen for a fortnight!" Thelma clasped her hands in dismay. "But I must go!" she cried impatiently; "I must, indeed, good Friedhof! I cannot stay here! Surely, surely there is some vessel that would take me, some fishing boat, what does it matter how I travel, so long as I get away?" The landlord looked at her rather wonderingly.

There are no public gardens or assemblies in Christiania, but numerous promenades; indeed, every road from the town leads to the most beautiful scenery, and every hill in the neighbourhood affords the most delightful prospects. Ladegardoen is the only spot which is often resorted to by the citizens by carriage or on foot.

"Why, I know them, too; at least, the younger brother, Help, Junior, they call him, though he is not far from my own age, and one of my particular friends. He has often dined with me in Christiania. Ah, well, my children, I can soon learn through him all that can be ascertained about the 'Viking. I'll write him this very day, and if need be I'll go and see him."

"Now that you are here," he said, "you may as well give me a few particulars about your doings on the Perisco, especially as they relate to Mr. James Allerdyke. When and where did you make his acquaintance?" "On the steamer a few hours after we left Christiania," replied Celia. "Just as fellow-passengers, I suppose?" "Quite so just that. We sat next to each other at meals."
