The excitement of the first days was quieted. The young king had withdrawn for a short time to the palace in Charlottenburg, while his wife remained in Berlin, anxiously expecting an invitation to follow her husband. But the young monarch appeared to have no care or thought but for his kingdom. He worked and studied without interruption; even his beloved flute was untouched.

She had now her ten thousand francs a month for "pin-money," her luxuriously appointed palace at Charlottenburg, and her Berlin mansion, "Unter den Linden," with its private theatre, in which she and her Royal lover, surrounded by their brilliant Court, applauded the greatest actors from Paris and Vienna.

Napoleon's military genius and indefatigable activity served him admirably on this occasion, and the proclamation just alluded to, which was dated from Berlin before his departure from Charlottenburg; proves that he did not act fortuitously, as he frequently did, but that his calculations were well-made.

Napoleon, the man who had broken Queen Louisa's heart, was now the friend and ally of King Frederick William, and the enemies of France were henceforth to be the enemies of Prussia! It was this that the king thought of to-day, when, in the early part of May, he was alone, and absorbed in his reflections, at his small house in Charlottenburg.

Her merry remarks and charming laughter had ceased, as also her sighs and suffering; her radiant eyes had closed forever, and her sweet lips spoke no more. She was still at Charlottenburg, but only as a corpse. The king had her mausoleum erected in the middle of the garden.

In the majority of these cases the weaker eye is useless, and the possibility of making it of any use is, at their age, practically nil." Special Report on Educational Subjects, vol. ii. Cf. Report on Elementary Schools of Berlin and Charlottenburg, by G. Andrew, Esq. Cf.

The Guide told us there were nine hundred rooms in the palace, but that he should only take us through the best. We were duly sensible of the mercy. Then we drove to Charlottenburg to see the Mausoleum. I know not when I have been more deeply affected than there; and yet, not so much by the sweet, lifelike statue of the queen as by that of the king, her husband, executed by the same hand.

The King's Magazines and War-furnitures about Berlin are wasted utterly, Arsenal itself not blown up, we well know why; and much Hunnish ruin in Charlottenburg, with damage to Antiques, for which latter clause there shall, in a few months, be reprisal: if it please the Powers! Of all this Montalembert declares, "Before God, that he, Montalembert, is and was the mainspring."

The goal was at last reached. The black ram for the propitiatory offering was found, and was now awaiting in Berlin the hour of sacrifice. With what eager impatience, with what throbbing pulses, did Fredersdorf wait for the evening! At last this sublime mystery would be explained, and rivers of gold would flow at his command. Happily, the king was not in Berlin he had gone to Charlottenburg.

And under these circumstances the Antiquities Room at Charlottenburg, where as a boy I had heard Hoeyen's lectures, grew to be a place that I entered with reverence, and Thorwaldsen's Museum my Temple, imperfectly though it reproduced the religious and heroic life and spirit of the Greeks.
