In fact it was one of the most disreputable vehicles it has ever been our misfortune to travel in, and when we made acquaintance of the road it had to travel over we must give the owner credit for an abundant faith in the toughness of the kreta. It was a cross between the carromata of the Philippines and a covered dog-cart. There was no aid to mount.

The shops of Manila had been altogether too alluring for the very small balance which remained in her purse after our ten days at Honolulu. The efforts of the small boys were apparently fruitless, so she resorted to the expedient of trying to gather up a carromata from some one leaving his at the Exposition Building.

He did not enter its doors, but remained sitting in the carromata till she joined him. The girl had her mind on salary, however, and had no time to question motives. The banks had closed, but her guardian angel drove her to a newspaper office, where he introduced her, vouched for her, and induced the bookkeeper to cash her check.

carromata: A small two-wheeled vehicle with a fixed top. casco: A flat-bottomed freight barge. cayman: The Philippine crocodile. cedula: Certificate of registration and receipt for poll-tax. chongka: A child's game played with pebbles or cowry-shells. cigarrera: A woman working in a cigar or cigarette factory.

We had picked up the vernacular of the street carromata in Manila. This is very simple. It consists of sigue, para, derecho, mano, and silla. For the benefit of such readers as do not understand pidgin Spanish, it may be explained that these words signify, respectively, "go on," "stop," "straight ahead," "to the right," and "to the left."

Peth were driven across the Bridge of Spain and up Bagumbayan Drive past the Walled City in a carromata, and disembarked from the native rig at the edge of the Luneta, whence they proceeded to the Bay View Hotel. Jarrow wore a new white suit, squeaky French shoes of yellow hue, and an aura of perfumed soap. Mr. Peth felt uncomfortably respectable in blue serge and a shirt with a starched collar.

Kipling calls "inadequate" shirts, whose business it was to go forth in response to the command, "Busca carromata," and to return not till accompanied by the two-wheeled nightmare and the Lilliputian pony. On the morning on which we drew our travel-pay checks, one of the Radcliffe girls was most eager to get down town before the bank closed.

A bamboo bridge had been built across the stream a few days before so that our cars might cross, but yesterday's rain had washed it down, and would we try to cross on rafts? Fortunately the distance was short, the carromata being an instrument of torture happily overlooked by the Spanish Inquisition. At Tayug a great concourse of people welcomed us, with arches, flags, and decorations.
