The Germans had their Kobolds, and the Scotch their Brownies, and the English had their Boggarts and Robin Goodfellow and Lubberkin all of them beings of the same description: house and farm spirits, who liked to live amongst men, and who sometimes did hard, rough work out of good-nature, and sometimes were spiteful and mischievous, especially to those who teased them, or spoke of them disrespectfully, or tried to see them when they did not wish to be seen.

The kitchen fire was at its last glimmer; but it showed a better supper than even last night, for the Cook had had friends with her a brother and two cousins and they had been exceedingly merry. The food they had left behind was enough for three Brownies at least, but this one managed to eat it all up.

She was also both careless and lazy, and disliked taking the trouble to put a bowl of milk in the same place every night for Mr. Nobody. "She didn't believe in Brownies," she said; "she had never seen one, and seeing's believing." So she laughed at the other servants, who looked very grave, and put the bowl of milk in its place as often as they could, without saying much about it.

He beckoned one of the busy, dwarfish little brownies toward him. "I ken I'm talking in my sleep," said the lad; "but can ye tell me what dell is this, and how I chanced to be in it?" The brownie might or might not have heard; but, at any rate, he deigned no reply, and went on with his task, which was pounding seeds in a stone mortar.

Any one would think from the expression on your face that you had seen 'The Klabautermann'!" "The Klabautermann" is a spirit of the sea similar to the brownies of the mountains and the goblins which play such a part in children's stories.

"What's this?" shouted the astonished Tailor, when he could find breath to speak. "It's the Brownies," sang the boys; and on they danced, for they had worked themselves up into a state of excitement from which it was not easy to settle down. "Where is Brownie?" shouted the father. "He's here," said Tommy; "we are the Brownies." "Can't you stop that fooling?" cried the Tailor, angrily.

Two separate times in the past, while flying head first over the handlebars of my bicycle I had broken my shoulder with considerable tearing of ligaments and tendons. At night when I was totally still I felt a whole crew of pixies and brownies with picks and shovels at work in the joint doing major repair work.

After this, I gave myself no further anxiety about Joseph's to-morrow, but went to bed, and dreamed of fighting for the Boy's life, Gulliver-like, against a band of infuriated Brownies. My first morning thought was to look out of all four windows at the mountains; my next, to ring for a bath.

The little people may occupy a castle or house, or the hill upon which such a building is erected, or a cave under it. Without dwelling upon the Brownies and other similar distinctly household spirits, there are certain classes which must be mentioned in this connection. The Magyar fairies live in castles on lofty mountain peaks. They build them themselves, or inherit them from giants.

It was a pleasant spring morning, and the "marble" season had just begun, when Howieson, after a vicious and well-directed stroke which won him three "brownies," inquired casually whether anybody had seen Bulldog go in; for, notwithstanding the years which came and went, his passing in was always an occasion.
