I was never in a dangerous position at the English front, if one excepts the fact that all of that portion of the country between the two lines of trenches is exposed to shell fire. No shells burst near me. Béthune was being intermittently shelled, but as far as I know not a shell fell in the town while I was there.
On relief from the Cambrin trenches on the 7th July the Battalion spent a little over a fortnight in Brigade and Divisional Reserves at Sailly Labourse and the Faubourg d'Arras in Bethune respectively. On the 25th it was in line at Vermelles. This sector was quiet except in that portion which was opposite the Hohenzollern Redoubt, from which huge aerial torpedoes were fired.
Such as I have described Mrs. Bethune Baliol, the reader will easily believe that, when I thought of the miscellaneous nature of my work, I rested upon the information she possessed, and her communicative disposition, as one of the principal supports of my enterprise.
He would have given his soul to hear the end of this terrible beginning this beginning that, at all events, sounds so terrible to him; but the fact that he is longing to hear, that he has been listening, makes him cold from head to heel. He moves away silently. Mrs. Bethune, catching his arm, says quickly: "You heard a secret a secret between those two you heard!"
"If I keep this fat fellow walking about in the sun much longer," whispered the king to De Bethune, who was third in the party, "I shall be sufficiently avenged for all the mischief he has done us."
"Oh, I beg your pardon, sweetheart; it was intended for me. I can imagine destiny standing sarcastically by your side, and watching you send the letter to one W. Smith when she intended it for another W. Smith. Eleanor Bethune I meant to know just as soon as possible. I was coming back to New York to look for you." "And, instead, she went to you in Colorado." "Only think of that!
I came across the sleeve to Albion and skirted your noisy eastern coast with but one name of a friend, pardieu, to make the strange cliffs cheerful." "You are very good," said the Baron simply, with half a bow. "And Hugh Bethune, now well, well! I am proud that he should mind of his old friend in the tame Highlands.
The small Flemish and French towns offer few amenities; in our mess we found our principal recreation in reunions with other fraternities at the pâtisserie or in an occasional mount. Of pâtisseries that at Bethune is the best; that at Poperinghe the worst. Besides, the former has a piano and a most pleasing Mademoiselle.
In consequence, the work progressed slowly and Stuyvesant ordered it to be carried on into the night. Jake and Bethune grumbled, but Dick found the longer hours and extra strain something of a relief. He had now no leisure to indulge in painful thoughts; besides, while he was busy at the dam he could not watch Kenwardine, and his duty to his employer justified his putting off an unpleasant task.
"Now, Myles, you know I have always had a great regard for you, and do you think I'd speak as I have done unless I was in earnest?" O'Hara reflected a moment, then turning to McGowan, said: "Ed, look-a here." "Yes, Myles, what is it?" "Bethune ourselves, an' on the level, what d'ye think the owld woman would say?" "Be tickled to death over it." "An' the childer what about thim?"
