I shall take the adventure, said Balin, that God will ordain me, but the sword ye shall not have at this time, by the faith of my body.
Balin was well received, and led to a chamber, where he laid off his armour. They also brought him robes to his pleasure, and would have had him leave his sword behind him. "Nay," said Balin, "that do I not, for it is the custom of my country for a knight always to have his weapon with him, and that custom will I keep, or else I will depart as I came."
"Though no man may ever value your kindness and bounty more, yet at the present time I must thank you for your kindness and beseech your good grace." "If you must go," said Arthur, "I pray you not to tarry long, for right welcome will you be on your return, and then I shall take pains to make right what I did amiss before." "God reward your lordship," said Balin, as he made ready to depart.
