Only four on the Zurghul duplicate. For the interpretation of these symbols, see Luschan, Ausgrabungen in Sendschirli, pp. 17-27, and Scheil's article. On the Zurghul tablet there are eight symbols, while the other contains nine. See pp. 263, 264. A text IVR. 5, col. i. compares each of the seven spirits to some animal.

The survival of the fittest is one of Darwin's emphasized laws of natural selection. He says: "In all cases the new and improved forms of life tend to supplant the old and unimproved forms. New varieties continually take the place of and supplant the parent form. New and improved varieties will inevitably supplant and exterminate the older." Origin of Species, pp. 264, 266, 413.

There were several branches of the Cornets: one settled in Provence, as we are informed by Grotius. Leid. ed. 1614. Vita Grotii ap. Batesium, p. 420. Ep. 264. ad Peyresc. p. 91. II. Cal. Papal Registers, Petitions, i., 264. Professor Tait, however, informs me that the monks took a sanguine view of their numbers. After the plague of 1362, we know that they were not much more numerous than in the previous century. Change was in the air in religion as well as in society.

From friends outside $3,264 were sent and about $1,800 were raised in various ways in the State. Dr. Shaw and Miss Jane Addams spoke in several cities and other prominent speakers were Mrs. Desha Breckinridge of Kentucky, Miss Helen Todd of California, Mrs. McCormick and "General" Rosalie Jones of New York. The State and county fairs were utilized.

In B.C. 509 Carthage made her first treaty with Rome. But the rivalry which grew up between the two Powers developed into a stubborn contest for the empire of the world, culminating in the three Punic wars. The first of these lasted from B.C. 264 to 241; the second, from B.C. 218 to 201.
