A gate of old Florentine scrolled iron opened suddenly upon a blaze of yellow in all the shades from the orange velvet of the wallflower through the shaded saffron of azalias and a dozen tints of tulip to the palest primrose and jonquil.
But when the spring comes, here truly is a transformation from cold and torpor! The soft warm air is redolent of the penetrating fragrance of orange blossom, of stocks, of jessamine, of wallflower, and of a hundred odorous plants and shrubs from each garden and grove behind the many obstructing walls.
The low-roofed cottage, with its many-pointed gables and narrow casement, was gay with the bright flowers of that home of their hearts cherished and guarded there with the tenderest care all hues of earth seemed blended in the bright parterre of tulips, over which the magnificent dahlia towered, tall and stately as a queen the rich scent of the wallflower breathed around, and the jessamine went climbing freely o'er the trellissed porch and arching eaves each flower around my home bore to me the face of a friend they bore to me the poetry of the earth, as the stars tell the sweet harmonies of heaven but there is a vision of fairer beauty than either star or flower comes with the thought of these bye-gone days the face of my orphan cousin Ella Werner arises in the brightness of its young beauty, as it used to beam upon me from the latticed window of my home: for her's, indeed,
Then there were games which consisted in the saying of strange incantations. The children would go round and round, as was evident from the sound of their feet, chanting the while: "Sally, Sally Wallflower, Sprinkle in a pan; Rise, Sally Wallflower, And choose your young man. Choose for the fairest one, Choose for the best, Choose for the rarest one, That you love best!"
In the fervor of discussing the game they ignored her. She was not used to being a wallflower.
They would gradually revert or turn back to their original form and colour. The flowers would become mixed in colour and less fine in size; at last they would be simple wild flowers again. Now it is June, and the blossoms of the Wallflower have faded and fallen. The old wall is, however, growing gay with another plant the Red Valerian.
He had probably returned to the more congenial society at the Assommoir, and someone said he might stay in the street; certainly no one would go after him, but just as they had swallowed the soup Coupeau appeared bearing two pots, one under each arm a balsam and a wallflower. All the guests clapped their hands.
They refuse to waltz together, which is perhaps a good thing, for if they did there would always be one left over to be a wallflower and gnash her teeth; and when they want to dance squares they are forced by the stubbornness of numbers to dance triangles. "How's your husband?" June asked me last time, in the defiant tones she seems to think proper at a ball. "Very well, thank you."
Robert liked Lizzie Flower first-rate, and told his mother so. A young woman never cares anything for an unlicked cub, nine years younger than herself, unless Fate has played pitch and toss with her heart's true love. And then, the tendrils of the affections being ruthlessly lacerated and uprooted, they cling to the first object that presents itself. Lizzie Flower was a wallflower.
Wallflower juice is good for reviving dancers who fall to the ground in a fit, and Solomon's seals juice is for bruises. They bruise very easily, and when Peter plays faster and faster they foot it till they fall down in fits. For, as you know without my telling you, Peter Pan is the fairies' orchestra.
