We were thrashing our way in a little brigantine, owned by Tom de Wolf, of Liverpool, against the strong north-east trade wind, from the Western Carolines to Milli in the Marshalls, when one day we sighted a low-lying cluster of five small palm-clad islands that lay basking, white and green, in the bright Pacific sun; and an hour before dark the Lunalilo dropped her anchor just in front of the native village.

With a rigidity that in other circumstances might, perhaps, have been commended, but, in relation to an Archduke, can only be described as designing, she insisted upon marriage. She was but Fraulein Milli Stubel, light-skirted dancer at the Court Opera-House, but, with unexampled hardihood, she maintained her headlong course along the criminal path of virtue.

'Thy lover! and Laea looked contemptuously at the small, slender figure of the slave girl, and then her cheek darkened with rage as she turned to her followers. 'See how this dog of a Narü hath insulted me! Have I come all this way to be fooled for the sake of such a miserable creature as this? and she pointed scornfully to Milli and then spat on the ground. 'Where is this fellow?

When the five canoes had sailed away a little distance from the beach, Laea saw the men of Tetuaroa open out their ranks, and, looking in the midst, she saw, lying face downwards on the sand, the body of Milli the Slave. So he sent a telegram, 'Tired of the sea. Can you find me a billet ashore? An answer soon came, 'Yes, if you can manage poultry farm and keep books.

Of the miseries and hardships of that voyage from Samoa to the Marshall Islands, I shall not speak. After a passage of forty-three days we reached Milli Lagoon, where we found Hayes awaiting us in the Leonora.

Later on he was sent away from Samoa in charge of a vessel under sealed orders to the Marshall Islands. These orders were to hand the vessel over to the notorious Captain "Bully" Hayes. He found Hayes awaiting him in his famous brig LEONORA in Milli Lagoon. He handed over his charge and took service with him as supercargo.

We sailed from Milli Lagoon for the Kingsmill Group a week later, and visited nearly every island in the cluster, buying coco-nut oil and other produce from the natives and the few scattered white traders. At Arorai, the southernmost island of the group, we found the natives in a state of famine owing to a long and disastrous drought.

At the name of Milli, the hot blood leapt into the face of the chief's son; but he answered quickly, 'Nay, naught have I heard, and how can the dream of a slave girl concern me on such a day as this?

A tall, grey-headed old warrior leapt out from the ranks of those that stood behind Laea. 'Thou and I, Tanéo, shall fight till one of us be slain. Suddenly Milli the Slave sprang between them with outstretched arms. 'Peace, peace! Drop thou thy spear, Tanéo, and thou thine, old man. There is no need for blood but mine for Narü is dead.
