The moral to be drawn from these pages surely must be this that there is splendid material to work upon, the most undaunted heroism and the noblest self-sacrifice, among the seafaring classes of our island. The suffering in May, 1864, was more terrible than in April; June showed a frightful increase over May, while words fail to paint the horrors of July and August, and so the wretchedness waxed until the end, in April, 1865. All the success achieved was the capture of Chocolate Hill, and the Irish claim that success. It is disputed by other regiments.
