No one, however, suggested that they should be forbidden to attempt to gain converts. It did not seem worth while interfering with them; for what Burman living in sight of the Shway Dagon Pagoda, and near to the monasteries where he had learnt the precepts of Guatama Buddha, would even think of forsaking his religion?

Apart from the coloured porcelain, nearly every portion of a Chinese temple or pagoda is painted, colour forming the chief means of producing effect; but as nearly everything is constructed of wood, there was and is no durability in these edifices.

It was a beautiful building, the centre much higher than the rest, to be filled with climbing roses, vines, etc.; the sides sloped off until they were only high enough to allow free entrance at the doors. It was finished in a highly ornamental manner, and in the distance resembled a heathen pagoda. This was Joe's first effort at architecture; and he was proud of it.

After our impromptu meal we proceeded to walk about half a mile farther and then ascended an eminence with several flights of stairs leading to the pagoda which I have previously alluded to. We obtained, not only a view of the Summer Palace, but of the surrounding country.

"Your servant thanks you for his life." Crack! There was a dull roar as of someone firing a very heavy duck-gun from the forest, and a ball whistled by their heads. "A jingal!" cried Buck. "We've got to hustle round and find shelter. The dacoits are on us." "The pagoda, sahibs," cried Me Dain. "It is the only place of stone in the village. Let us hasten there."

The vast property which the deceased had accumulated, chiefly by steamboat and railway speculations in the West Indies, rendered him one of the richest proprietors in the county. We understand that the entire fortune is bequeathed solely to his grand-niece, Mrs. Caroline Otway Brownlow, widow of the late Joseph Brownlow, Esq., and at present resident in the Pagoda, Kenminster Hill.

It was a little cold, but we got warmer as the sun rose over the Bhamo trees, and pagoda, and Joss House. At first the coolies stood round us, and our baggage, and took stock of us, but gradually the interest flagged, and they sat down, and we drew them, and G. made this sketch of Bhamo, and the sunrise over China.

It was decided that the guide should direct the elephant towards the pagoda of Pillaji, which he accordingly approached as quickly as possible. They halted, half an hour afterwards, in a copse, some five hundred feet from the pagoda, where they were well concealed. But they could hear the groans and cries of the fakirs distinctly. They then discussed the means of rescuing the victim.

Ives is 'a rudderless hulk. 'It's a pagoda, says Stevenson in a letter dated September, 1894, 'and you can just feel or I can feel that it might have been a pleasant story if it had only been blessed at baptism. He had to rewrite portions of it in consequence of having received what Dr. Johnson would have called 'a large accession of new ideas. The ideas were historical.

Architecturally the pagoda, in general, may be described as having a spire, massive throughout, rising from a circular, square, or octagonal base, in a succession of tiers or circles, of which the upper is always narrower than the one beneath it. The principal industry of Mandalay is the weaving of silk, for which it is very celebrated, and a visit to the bazar was most interesting.
