XXXIV. I am speaking at present concerning the subject matter of a speech, not about the kind of speaking requisite. He must be a master of civil law, which forensic debates are in daily need of. For what is more shameful than for a man to undertake the conduct of legal and civil disputes, while ignorant of the statutes and of civil law?
XXXIV. Now, the universe sows, as I may say, plants, produces, raises, nourishes, and preserves what nature administers, as members and parts of itself. If nature, therefore, governs them, she must also govern the universe. And, lastly, in nature's administration there is nothing faulty. She produced the best possible effect out of those elements which existed.
There in full light the Lord passes before us and proclaims, 'I am the Lord, the Lord God merciful and gracious. 'Ye are come ... unto Jesus. 'See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh. 'This is my Beloved Son, hear Him ! ... Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. EXODUS xxxiv. 29.
Poetry like this in the earliest ages of the world!" Of Elihu's contentions in chapter xxxiv., "A good many truths, but served up with bitter herbs, not with love": on chapter xxxvii., "Beautiful poetry, but a very bleak and barren picture of God; hard, arbitrary, selfish, self-centred, striking terror into His works, and compelling obedience and service. Nature cannot reveal Him, Elihu!"
For at his death, the Israelites still "dwelt among them," and each nation is mentioned by name. See Judges i. 5, and yet we are told that "Joshua was full of the spirit of the Lord and of WISDOM," Deut. xxxiv. 9. Joshua xi, 15-23.
XXXIV. But the kind of affliction of which I have treated is that which is the greatest; in order that when we have once got rid of that, it may appear a business of less consequence to look after remedies for the others. For there are certain things which are usually said about poverty; and also certain statements ordinarily applied to retired and undistinguished life.
The primitive decalogue, represented by Exodus xxxiv., and probably from the first associated with Moses, appears, in the earliest periods of Israel's history, to have enjoyed a canonical authority.
Sometimes the correction of what might seem trivial error, as in Exodus xxxiv. 33, gives an intelligible view of the whole details of the circumstance specified. Moses put on the veil after he had ceased speaking with them. While he was speaking to them he was speaking as God's representative.
XXXIV. Of the chambers of the Temple. The chambers were of several sizes; some little, some large; some higher, some lower; some more inward, and some outward. They were for resting-places. Here the priests and porters were wont to lodge. They were for hiding-places. And some of them were for solace and delight; and, I must add, some for durable habitation.
I have no return, Sir, to make you for your goodness, but one a return which I am persuaded will not be unacceptable the honest warm wishes of a grateful heart for your happiness, and every one of that lovely flock who stand to you in a filial relation. If ever Calumny aims the poisoned shaft at them, may friendship be by to ward the blow! XXXIV. To MR, GAVIN HAMILTON, MAUCHLINE.
