Captain Whitley pursued the perpetrators of this bloody act, with thirty men. On the sixth day of pursuit through the wilderness, he came up with twenty Indians, clad in the dresses of those whom they had slain. They dismounted and dispersed in the woods though not until three of them were killed.

Sergeant Whitley was not educated, but his experience was vast, he knew men and he had the gift of sympathy. He understood Dick's feelings. "All civil wars are cruel," he said. "The killing of one's own people is worst of all." But as they went on, Dick's melancholy fell from him, and he had only pleasant recollections of the meeting.

Whitley Stokes. It was then extended to the High Courts, which had been previously omitted, and alterations were made both in arrangement and in substance. Of these alterations Fitzjames says that he does not consider them to be improvements; but upon that point I am not competent to form any opinion.

She seemed all the more admirable and wonderful to Colonel Winchester, because she did not weep or faint. The deathly pallor on her face remained, but she held herself firmly erect beside the gigantic colored woman. "Come with me, Pennington," said Colonel Winchester, "and you, too, Sergeant Whitley." The two men and the boy led the way upon the field, and the two women came close behind.

"By the time they've spelled out from the flags what Sheridan is doing he'll be doing something else." They resumed their climb and the ravine led again into dense forest. Sergeant Whitley had moved up by the side of Shepard, as they were now near the enemy, and his great scouting abilities were needed.

They found also that her companion of that night at the park, James Whitley, had hurriedly left Boyd City on the morning train, over the "Frisco," to Jonesville, and had not returned, nor could his whereabouts be discovered. It was given out in public, among the society items of the Whistler, that he had been called suddenly to the bedside of a sick friend; but Dick and the detective knew better.

Warner and Pennington had come, unharmed as he had expected, and they were exultant over the victory. "Come over here," said Warner to Dick. "Sergeant Whitley has cooked a glorious supper and we're waiting for you." Dick joined them eagerly, and the sergeant received them with his benevolent smile.

The sergeant was already there, whispering to Colonel Winchester. "They've taken to cover, too, sir," said the sergeant. "How many do you suppose they are?" asked the colonel. "Not more than we are, sir." "They run a great risk when they attack us in this manner." "Maybe, sir," said Dick, "they, too, were coming for the water." Colonel Winchester looked at Sergeant Whitley.

He feasted royally the hands who put up the house; and to pay for the whiskey they drank he had to sell one of his farms. In January he followed a war party, rescued a captive white man, and took prisoner an Indian who was afterwards killed by one of the militia "a cowardly fellow," says Whitley.

Tears of mortification came to Dick's eyes, but Sergeant Whitley, who rode on his right hand, said: "It's the only thing to do. Remember that however bad your position may be it can always be worse. It's better for some of us to escape than for all of us to be down or be taken." Dick knew that his logic was good, but the mortification nevertheless remained a long time.
