"Shall we take up this wake-robin?" asked Ethel Blue. "Let's not," pleaded Ethel Brown. "We shall find others somewhere and there's only one here." They left it standing, but when they came upon a growth of wind-flowers there were so many of them that they did not hesitate to dig them freely.
"But you can't get along all morning without food," he said. She looked away from him toward the shore of the mainland where the towers of "Wake-Robin" made a gray smudge against the trees. "Oh, yes, I can," she said shortly.
As the guests gathered in the drawing-room and on the terrace before dinner it was apparent to Markham that, unless he obeyed the injunctions of his small preceptor, he would be quite forgotten amid this gay company. On Thimble Island, as in New York, he had not found them necessary to his own existence, and it was quite clear that her at "Wake-Robin" they returned his indifference.
"You think I may pervert contaminate them " "Not you your friends " "I was hoping that you would all come to 'Wake-Robin' for June." "I I've made other plans," said Mrs. Westfield. Hermia's jaw set and her face hardened. They were thoroughly antipathetic now. "That, of course, will be as you please," she said coldly.
No mail has been forwarded here." "Oh!" And then: "I didn't know just what to think unless that you had gone back to Normandy." "I'm going next month. Meanwhile I rented Thimble Island " "I wrote you that I was coming here to 'Wake-Robin, Miss Challoner's place," she said pettishly, "and that I was sure there would be one or two commissions for you in the neighborhood if you cared to come."
Readers of "Wake-Robin" will recognize a part of it in the matchless description of the bluebird which is found in the initial essay of that book. In 1860, in the "Leader," there also appeared a long essay by Mr. Burroughs, "On Indirections." This has the most unity and flow of thought of any thus far. It is so good I should like to quote it all. Here are the opening paragraphs:
Nuttall speaks explicitly to the same effect, though with no specification of the grounds on which his statement is based. The later systematic biographers Brewer, Samuels, Minot, and the authors of New England Bird Life are silent in respect to the point. Mr. Burroughs, in Wake-Robin, mentions having found two nests, and gives us to understand that he saw only the female birds. Mrs.
In each tangled ravine Flora's little pious mortals of the May anemone, yellow violet, blood-root, mustard, liverwort, and their yet humbler neighbors and kin heard mass, or held meeting whichever it was and slept for blissful lack of brain while Jack-in-the-pulpit preached to them, under Solomon's seal, and oriole, tanager, warbler, thrush, up in the choir-loft, made love between the hymns, ate tidbits, and dropped crumbs upon wake-robin, baby-toes, and the nodding columbine.
"Do you know the names of all the flowers in your bouquet?" asked Uncle Robert. "Every one of them," said Susie. "This is phlox. There is ever so much of it in the woods now. And this is a trillium. Isn't it big and white? Here is another, only it is red." "We used to call the red ones 'wake-robin' in New England," said Uncle Robert. "I thought they came earlier than the white ones."
Here he came upon evidences of a meal which the rival had made upon wake-robin roots. Satisfied before he had devoured all he had dug, some of the roots still lay scattered about, but, though Mokwa was hungry, he disdained the crumbs from the other's table. He dined, instead, upon a fat field mouse which he caught napping beside its runway.
