Roger of Wendover says that in Lesser Brittany and Normandy, in 1062, there was seen a female monster, consisting of two women joined about the umbilicus and fused into a single lower extremity. They took their food by two mouths but expelled it at a single orifice. At one time, one of the women laughed, feasted, and talked, while the other wept, fasted, and kept a religious silence.

I called upon you two hours ago; but, like Antony, 'you revel long o' nights. Ah, that I could add with Shakspeare, that you were 'notwithstanding up. I have just come from Paris, that umbilicus terrae, and my adventures since I saw you, for your private satisfaction, 'because I love you, I will let you know; but you must satisfy me with a meeting. Till you do, 'the mighty gods defend you!

They were healthy girls, four years of age, and apparently perfect in every respect, except that, from the ensiform cartilage to the umbilicus, they were united by a band 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. The children when facing each other could draw their chests three or four inches apart, and the band was so flexible that they could sit on either side of the body.

This handsome species is of a rich fulvous hue, with dark chestnut bands and a deep chestnut umbilicus, partly covered by the reflexion of the nearly black lip. It is allied to the H. incei, a well known north-east Australian species. It was found in hollow trees, and under logs and stones at Port Molle, in the same region. Helix macgillivrayi. It might be added that this spot was enshrined in the heart of every loyal citizen of Warwick as the true umbilicus of the visible universe. In the eyes of Llewellyn Leigh, however, the place had no such mystic significance.

"Oh, I'm not standing at present, Stark, I'm crawling on my umbilicus same as the rest of you; the only difference is that I retain the charm and radiance of my countenance." "When do you purpose to announce your candidacy for representative?" Sasnett looked at him so quickly that even his smile scarcely veiled the shrewdness of his glance.

In the surgical treatment of appendicitis the American profession has taken the lead, and the mention of this disease brings to mind such names as McBurney, whose name is given to an anatomical point McBurney's Point midway between the right anterior superior spine of the ileum and the umbilicus, Deaver of Philadelphia, and Ochsner and Murphy of Chicago.

Simmons reports a case in which a calculus passed through a fistulous sore in the loins without any concomitant passage of urine through the same passage. Vosberg mentions a calculus in a patent urachus; and calculi have occasionally been known to pass from the umbilicus.

Minot speaks of the passage of one prong of a pitchfork through the body of a man of twenty-one, from the perineum to the umbilicus; the man recovered. Hamilton reports a case of laceration of the perineum with penetration of the pelvic cavity to the depth of ten inches by a stick 3/4 inch thick.

Salevao, the god of the rocks, observed motion in the moa or centre of the earth. The child was born and named Moa, from the place where it was seen moving. Salevao ordered the umbilicus to be laid on a club, and cut with a stone; and hence the custom ever after on the birth of a man-child. Salevao then provided water for washing the child and made it sa, or sacred to Moa.
