The heart alone, when touched by sympathy, trembles and responds to their hidden meaning! Genius or originality is, for the most part, some strong quality in the mind, answering to and bringing out some new and striking quality in nature.
And then these lights do not remain motionless. They creep slowly towards the churchyard of every village. Louder sounds the death-knell, the air trembles beneath the strokes of so many bells, and, at rare intervals, the funeral chant rises faintly to the summit of the hill. Why so many interments?
It was on one of these occasions, that Garrison addressed to him the following sonnet: "Thou kind and venerable friend of man, In heart and spirit young, though old in years! The tyrant trembles when thy name he hears, And the slave joys thy honest face to scan.
And, as his imagination kindles at the retrospect, he is transported back to the interesting moment; he counts the fearful odds of the contending hosts; his interest for the result overwhelms him; he trembles, as if it were still uncertain, and seems to doubt whether he may consider Socrates and Plato, Demosthenes, Sophocles, and Phidias, as secure, yet, to himself and to the world.
Sin against light, against mercy, and the long-suffering of God, is come up against him; his hope and confidence now lie a-dying by him, and his conscience totters and shakes continually within him! It is only a question of time now! "Clara! do you love me?" There is a pause. She shrinks from looking at him she trembles with strange contradictory sensations of pleasure and pain.
But I know of one who will hasten to take it, who will not be afraid, and who will show no mercy to him before whom everyone else trembles."
All movement ceases, the sky clears, the heavens are as brass; the slightest whisper seems sacrilege, and man becomes timid, affrighted at the sound of his own voice. Sole speck of life journeying across the ghostly wastes of a dead world, he trembles at his audacity, realizes that his is a maggot's life, nothing more.
Eagerly Keralio seized the portmanteau, and, opening it, emptied the contents. A perfect shower of greenbacks genuine ones this time fell upon the floor. With shaking hands, like a miser who trembles as he handles his hoarded gold, Keralio picked up the money by armfuls and, taking it to a table, proceeded to count it. "Is it all here?" he demanded suspiciously. The valet scowled.
